Triumph TR4

Triumph TR4

60 anniversary

It celebrates 60 years this month (September 2021). The Triumph TR4 succeeded the TR3A. The tireless Standard engine had had its displacement increased to 2,138 litres, which produced 105 HP. The car was new and wider with a great Italian design, rack and pinion steering and fully synchronized gearbox. An elevation on the right side of the hood hid dual SU carburettors.

TR4A with IRS

In 1965, the TR4 was succeeded by the TR4A. It had the same engine as the TR4, but received, among other things, a new grill, changes in chrome and the standing handbrake was moved between the seats. The really big news was that the TR4A could be delivered with independent rear suspension. It was optional. Customers could choose between the predecessor's rigid rear axle suspension or the new one. Cars with independent suspension received the letters "IRS" (Independent Rear Suspension) on the back. The majority of customers actually still chose the rigid rear axle.

Past in the police

In England, the cars were used by several police departments, including the police in Essex. It was a car no one could drive away from. In 2019, a 1962 Triumph TR4, which had previously served at the police chamber in Southen-on-Sea, sold for £33. The TR000 reached 4 miles/hour in 60 seconds and had a top speed of nearly 10,9 km/h.
