I spotted a cool Fiat Scudo motorhome and while searching for similar cars online, I discovered something I've never seen before - a very special motorhome concept.
Heku Fahrzeugbau
I am impressed by how much creativity the manufacturers have put into small camper vans. Fiat Scudo, for example, with fiberglass superstructure from Heku is equipped with both a water closet and shower, as well as standing height and 3 beds. Heku is a German company that today produces boat trailers and motorcycle trailers. Although their motorhome production is history, it is interesting from the eyes of a car enthusiast. Let's put the Fiat Scudo aside for a moment. Here is Heku Car Camp!
Only adapted to Opel
The vehicle in the picture is a Heku Car Camp 2 that was produced between 2007 and 2012 for the Opel Astra H and J. The trailer is locked in a fixed, non-swiveling grip on the car's towbar. The roof is fixed in Opel's original roof rack. The trailer weighs approximately 700 kg and is not equipped with brakes. The camper was produced in two models. The first was adapted to the Opel Kadett E GSI, Daewoo Nexia and Astra F. It had two struts which had to be bolted into specially built receivers on the car. In addition, the brake hose had to be connected to the car's brake system. The roof mounts are the same on both models.
For Autobahn
Da Deutsche Caravanning Institute at the time Car Camp tested the Astra H, they commented that it was easy to get wheelspin at start-up - but once up to speed, you could cruise steadily at 130-150 km/h with the 100 hp turbodiesel under the bonnet. The motorhome unit was not noticed much, except in strong crosswinds. Fuel consumption increased by 0,2 - 0,3 liters per 10 km - the same as driving with a light trailer.
Approved for 4
The small caravan is equipped with a seating area, a small kitchen with work space and a fixed portapotti toilet. There is no shower – understandably so. When the evening comes, you can set up 4 beds - as many as you are allowed to take in the car.
Of the first model, 300 copies were sold. I do not know how many were sold of model 2. All were probably sold in Germany, but since the vehicle is Tüv-approved, they should also be able to be registered in Norway. It is worth noting that the car and trailer are probably registered as one vehicle. I am not sure if you can easily mount the Camp on another, similar Astra. There is currently one restored Car Camp 2 for sale online at €17.950. It can be picked up in Baden-Württemberg, a 10-hour drive from Denmark, with good opportunities to take a longer route home.
There is a separate club for Heku Car Camp owners, and eventually they will surely appear at retro-camping events.
Back to the Scudo
The car in the photo appears to have been outside for at least one winter. It has Swedish plates, but is probably imported from Germany. There is a nice edition of the same model for sale in the Netherlands for €16.000. You get one bed in the alcove, two in the lounge, 100 liter fresh water tank and 80 liter septic tank and 3 gas burners in the kitchen as well as a very nice appearance. The interior space is well utilized and the motorhome is at least as cool as a classic Transit or Volkswagen Westfalia.
