Production of the I-Pace has now been stopped. From now on, Jaguar's electric car model will be on the used car market where it can attract new buyers. Unfortunately, there is one reason why you should steer clear.
Recall
Earlier this autumn, a Jaguar I-Pace caught fire while it was parked against a cabin wall (source: TV2 Broome). At about the same time, a letter had arrived at the owner's residence stating that the car had been called in for inspection. Jaguar Land Rover have had as many as 5 recalls due to heat build-up and fire in the batteries on the I-Pace. The last one is referred to as Urgent Fire Risk when Parked. Cars manufactured between 5 January 2018 and 14 March 2019 must be checked. Until then, owners are encouraged not to charge their cars more than 80% and to park them outside for safety's sake.
Some get new batteries
LG Chem has supplied the batteries for the I-Pace. The same manufacturer was previously involved in the recall of Hyundai Kona where it was decided to change the batteries of as many as 77.000 cars. Jaguar has so far avoided such large-scale operations, but in connection with the latest recall it has Jaguar Land Rover declared that they will replace the batteries or buy back cars that cannot be repaired. In the USA, the company will buy back 2760 cars.

The last recall concerning the I-Pace was issued on 15.04.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX (UK). The car owner who lost his car in the fire was not notified of the recall until several months later, and was unaware that his car had been recalled when the car burned. Late notification may be related to the fact that the car was imported second-hand, but there is reason to believe that other car owners are also unaware that their cars have been recalled. Several affected cars may, for example, be prepared for sale in showrooms.

If you are looking for a used I-Pace registered before 2020, you may risk getting a car that has a recall hanging over it without anyone telling you about it. In the worst case, the car could start to burn. IN Best If so, you can get a new battery under warranty. Bingo! But you can also get an offer to deliver the car to a dealer for a predetermined purchase price. Let's cross our fingers that the purchase price covers the car loan.
Maybe they should just put it up for sale without mentioning anything about the recall?

A new practice?
What can be demanded from the car manufacturers' battery warranty? What do you do if new batteries cost more than the car is worth? Tesla has followed a practice where they exchange broken battery packs for used ones. This requires that there is access to used batteries from scrap yards. It is doubtful whether Jaguar Land Rover will find a sufficient number of used battery packs that are not covered by the recall. Then the alternative may be to buy back the cars and send them for recycling. It is not known whether it is a good solution for the car owners - but they hardly have any choice.

A closed chapter
Production of the I-Pace at Magna-Steyr, Graz in Austria has ended. Jaguar Land Rover has no plans to develop any successor. They have instead chosen to focus on exclusive electric sports car models. It is probably a wise decision. According to the company, the I-Pace was a no-profit project. It has provided useful experiences with electric platforms. The fact that a British company wants to focus on an exclusive market rather than ordinary electric cars can be a good strategy considering the wave of new car models that are now flowing in from China.
7.745 Jaguar I-Pace were registered in this country - most between 2018 and 2020. The cars were known for being among the first electric cars with usable range and space. The 2020 model's list prices were from NOK 629.000 (EV320 S) to NOK 874.000 (EV400 HSE). On the plus side were driving pleasure and a great design. On the minus side, one could note that the range was shorter than expected and that the fast charging could have gone faster. We have also noted that the cabin heat disappears during charging in cold weather.
