The Porsche Boxster went into production as a 1997 model. After 8 years, it was time for a successor – the Porsche Boxster 987.
At first it was just the Boxster…
Shortly after Porsche launched its first Boxster, they launched their then new 911 type 996. It shared several design features with the Boxster. The family resemblance was clearly visible, including the special headlights. When both models were renewed, Porsche abandoned the special headlights. The similarities between the Boxster and the 911 were no longer as obvious. Generation 2 of the Porsche Boxster (2004-2012) received a number of cosmetic changes compared to its predecessor. New headlights, new instruments, to name a few.
The 987 series inherited the 2.7 and 3.2 engines from its predecessor – with a slight increase in power. In 2007, the engines received camshafts with variable lift times, which gave a little more power. The 2.7 engine now had 245 HP. In 2009, a facelift came – in Porsche style, designated as the 987.2. Then the base engine was increased to 2.9 liters with 255 HP, and the S version got 3.4 liters and 310 HP. The Boxster S and Cayman S were built at the Valmet factory in Finland.
Visual changes included new front and rear lights, as well as a new arrangement of the exhaust tailpipes and diffuser.
Then came the Cayman
In 2007, the Cayman was introduced in the 987 series. The model is therefore available as both 987.1 and 987.2. Cars with a fixed roof, such as the Cayman, generally provide better rigidity in the body and can be built more easily. As a daily means of transport in Nordic conditions, the Cayman is probably better suited than the Boxster. The Boxster's completely open body offers a roadster feel that many will appreciate if the car is acquired as a hobby vehicle. At the moment, we only have pictures of the 987 Cayman. It may therefore appear that there are fewer 987 Boxsters in use.
About the pictures
The main picture is a 2008 model Cayman 987.1 with the upgraded 2.7-liter. The picture was taken at Fornebu. The car in front of the blue wall was taken at Sjøflyhavna Kro outside Oslo. It is a facelifted Cayman with a 2.9-liter engine. The lizard-green Cayman S participated in Cars & Coffee Lierskogen 2026. Here are some pictures from a Porsche meet in the Mediterranean town of Saint Cyprien, France. A Cayman S and a facelifted 987 in front of the Ferris wheel. The black Cayman is a pre-facelift Boxster model from 2006 with a 2.7 liter 245 HP. It was photographed at Rolfstangen outside Oslo. The car with the powerful rear spoiler and wide wheels was also photographed at the same place.
