American Motors Corporation was founded in 1954 by a merger between the Nash Kelvinator Corporation and the Hudson Car Company - both old, venerable car manufacturers. Over the years, cars were produced under brand names such as Nash, Hudson, Rambler before AMC was adopted. Renault also bought into AMC for a period. Renault Alliance then became a new car brand from AMC. In 1987, Renault withdrew from AMC and the company was acquired by Chrysler.
