BMW Z3

The BMW Z3 is a roadster sports car based on BMW's E36 series.

BMW's MX-5/Miata challenger

The BMW Z3 is the successor after Z1. Compared to the Z1, the Z3 became more conventional, - based on the then 3-series platform E36 and motorisation. The Z3 gained great popularity, not least in Norway, because you could get it with moderate, relatively tax-friendly engines. When the model arrived in 1995, the 1,8 liter engine with 116 HP was the best. Then the Z3 became a good alternative to the Mazda MX-5 (Miata).

Engines

The engines in the Z3 are the same as those in BMW's 3 series at the same time. The most popular engine in Norway is undoubtedly the 1,8 liter 116 HP. You could also get it with 1,9 liters 140 HP, which was better suited to the continent. A more special experience is BMW's 2,8 liter inline six with 192 HP. Not only more power, but also a wonderful soundscape, which is especially appreciated in an open car.

Variants

The Z3 was delivered in two variants. Roadster – open 2-seater with fabric roof or hardtop. Later, a coupé variant appeared, It is a closed car with 3 doors and finished at the back like a small station wagon, or "shooting brake".

Prices

In terms of price, you can get a usable Z3 (1995-2002) for between NOK 60-80 with around 000 km on the odometer - in normal working condition. Due to their age, there are also cars that are – or should be considered – pure repair objects. Be aware that BMW is known for keeping parts and workshop prices rigid. The Z2 is undoubtedly a BMW classic - and is about to go from being a used car to a collector's car. That can affect prices, especially on fine examples with in-line sixes.

About the pictures

The main picture (with the top down) was taken at Lysakerfjorden. Unfortunately, I have not succeeded in taking very many pictures, despite the fact that there are still many Z3s around. The same car is also photographed at Fornebu Fire Station - this time with the top up.
