The Bayerischen MotorenWerk first appeared in 1916. The company had been building aircraft engines since 1910. They started production of motorcycles, and in 1928 they began producing the Austin 7 under license as the BMW Dixi. In 1994 they bought Rover, which they sold a few years later, but kept the Mini brand name. Today's Mini is thus produced by BMW. BMW has also owned Rolls-Royce since 1998.
