Photo Sunday - Freewheel

During the Whitsun weekend, the city of Perpignan organized a vehicle fair with a wide range of themes. The images in this week's Photo Sunday are from "Roue Libre" which loosely translates to "free wheel" or "free h.

Rather M-Town than electric car

I had expected that the electric cars would be more in focus. One of the purposes of the event was that the car dealers could show off their electric cars and that the public could test drive them. BMW's stand rather focused on cars that belong in "M Town", where the following slogan applies: “M Town Where Too Much Is Just Right”. It plays on the fact that one should not be ashamed of driving in a fit car. BMW's electric cars were also there, but in Perpignan ordinary people don't dream of electric cars.

Renault Alpine

Speaking of dreams, I think a lot of people dream of driving an Alpine A110 on a deserted country road. Alpine is French and owned by the Renault group. Their first new car model was a tribute to the legendary A110. Alpine is working on several projects, and last week showed off its first electric car concept at a car meet in Alpine's hometown of Dieppe. The car is a rally version of the Renault R5 concept car. It's probably too early to send it on tour.

Limited selection on Sunday mornings

On Sunday morning, not all the participants and companies had arrived. I was particularly interested in Retrofit where electric car drives are installed in classic cars, such as the Citroen 2CV. Retrofit was not there, nor were there any major innovations among electric cars. Peugeot showed off its new e-2008 with a range of over 400 km. Fortunately, the designers have now cleaned up the front part of the model. The Peugeot e-2008 is one of the most interesting models in terms of price, space and range for most people - both in Norway and France.

The local car club

The local car club Automobile Club Roussillon were present with beautiful classic cars which they drove in a separate lane around the park separated from the street system. The concept of "Roue libre" - or free wheel - largely applied to the beautiful cars that drove around at regular intervals and created a good atmosphere.

The Citroen DS with a short wheelbase and 2 doors was used for Rally - and was also called Rally, I think.

The DS was made with a shortened wheelbase and 2 doors for rallying. I think the model in the picture was called Rally, but can't remember that it ever featured in Citroen's regular model range. The car looks really tough with its shortened rear and free wheel arches.

An unusual end to a legendary car. It's the first time I've seen one like that in real life.

Import from Brazil

Lately I've been seeing classic Volkswagen models produced in Brazil. I have also seen a unique Alpine A108 produced as Willys Interlagos in Brazil, as well as several Puma models based on Volkswagen. You'd think someone had sent local car enthusiasts on a group trip to Brazil? Now I know where the great cars come from. At the Roue Libre fair there was a local company that specializes in importing cars from Brazil, like the yellow car in the picture – a Puma GT 1600.

Along the street in Céret

Céret is one of many villages in the Catalan part of France where cobbled streets with picturesque stone houses still exist. At the beginning of the 1900th century, the city was a meeting place for artists. From our shepherd's hut, we can see into the old garden where Pablo Picasso and George Braque held merry parties 100 years ago - where Salvador Dali was also present.

Céret is located in a very rural setting at the foot of the Pyrenees - very close to the border with Spain. The nearest big city is Barcelona. The city is very far from Paris and the Côte d'Azur - in a positive way. It is not expensive to visit the restaurants, everyone speaks French and there are cars here that you cannot find in the Côte d'Azur. Now there is no longer a 2CV or Renault 4 on it each street corner in Céret. But since we are in an area where cars do not rust, there are still many cars such as Renault 5, Express, Citroen C15, Renault Twingo mk 1 and Peugeot 205 on the roads. These are cars that are almost extinct in other parts of Europe, but here they are common. In 5 years they may be gone for good.

The car in the main picture above belongs in Céret. It is a Millesime edition that appeared in recent years in production with a nice equipment package. The equipment level with, among other things, a rear spoiler is supplemented by yellow lights, integrated fog lights, black signs and a sunroof. The sunroof gives the car character. According to the owner, the panoramic roof is taken from a Twingo. The car has recently been fixed up after an injury and is often on the move in the city with the owner behind the wheel. Citroen Ami 9A and 2CV

I don't think the new electric Ami is sold in Norway. It is also not a big sales hit in our part of France. The car pictured is actually the only one I've seen in town. I think it's a shame that it is only made as moped car. If it had been built as a 4-wheel motorcycle (quadricycle lourd), it could be registered in vehicle class L7e. If the car could go faster than 45 km/h, you could follow normal traffic flow. Then I think it would be better received in the market. The reason I took a picture of it is because of the nice 2CV patina it has - just like the great 2CV on the right.

Lemon Xantia

I forgot to mention that the Citroen Xantia is one of the car models that is still current and drivable here. The car in the picture above belongs to the first series of Xantia. I have passed it several times and have noticed how great it is. For being BX's successor, Xantia seems less distinctive - more "mainstream". But if you get hold of a Xantia with Active Suspension, you have a wolf in sheep's clothing on the road.

Many Citroen 2CVs have been in continuous operation since they were new.

Renault

Renault Espace

Let's forget the 2CV and the R4s for a while. Although there are fewer of them, they still exist. I am particularly impressed by the 2CV and R4 that are still in daily use, like the one parked in front of us at one of the city's supermarkets. I would rather focus on the image of Espace from the first series. This is a model that was designed by Matra – a name that arouses enthusiasm in many. The straight, square lines with large glass surfaces were typical of 80s models. The Espace was not just a minibus, but an MPV with the possibility of converting the compartment into a saloon. I don't know the technology in the Espace 1, but I think the design is really tough - something that belongs among 80s icons like the Aston Martin Lagonda and the DeLorean DMC-12.

At the moment there are far too many Renault Expresses for me to take pictures of them all. I liked this one because it is clean (renovated) in the bodywork, got nice rims and equipped with the passenger car front from "Supercinq". Most Renault Express in the city are pure used cars with signs of use all over. À propos Super 5, I thought the motif of the Renault 5 on the loading platform of a Saviem Renault SG2 (3,5 tonnes) was really French and nostalgic. I hope the Super 5 is on its way renovation and not the scrap car.

Peugeot

Peugeot 304

I have the impression that few people take the time to restore a Peugeot 304 Berline. The ones I have seen have been in original good condition - probably also the car in the pictures. I have not seen it in the city before, but discovered it on a Sunday visit to the city close to where we live. I had time to admire the stylish Italian lines. They give associations to the Alfa Romeo Super Giulia. I wish Peugeot would find a way back to previous alignments instead of today's crisscrossing lines.

Peugeot 504 Pickup

The pickup model was put into production a few years before the production of the passenger car was phased out, and continued until the early 90s. If you see a 504 pickup, it doesn't have to be very old. I think most pick-up cars you see on the road today have undergone some form of renovation - like the car in the picture. I have seen it in several places in the city, including recently at the city's Peugeot workshop. Considering how solid the 504 Break was, there is reason to believe that this pickup will be able to serve for many years to come.

I have been to a French car meeting in Perpignan and took pictures which will eventually be entered in the respective articles below the car catalogue to illustrate different models, variants, equipment levels and colours. Here is a taste from the gallery last Sunday.

Rare Italians

photo sunday — Vespa 400 from a French car event

Vespa (Piaggio) 400 is a vehicle of which there are hardly many in Norway. It was produced around the same time as the Isetta. It has a 2-cylinder air-cooled stern-mounted scooter engine which, according to the specifications, should produce 14 horses and reach a top speed of 80-90 km/h. This car is a regular at the local car shows and it's basically the only example I've ever seen. Lamborghini Aventador is at the other end of the performance spectrum. It has a V12 engine and can do 0-100 in 2.9 seconds. Both the Aventador and the next car, Dino 308 GT4, are rare. Dino is, as everyone knows, Ferrari. But when Ferrari developed a model with 6 and eventually 8 cylinders, Dino was chosen as the brand name as it was feared that it could drag down the Ferrari brand. After all, Ferrari was known for only making cars with V12 engines. When the Dino 308 GT4 received a new body in 1977, it was named the Ferrari 308 – officially the first Ferrari with 8 cylinders.

Ford and Jaguar

Ford Sierra stands for many as one of the last proper Fords - with rear-wheel drive. The top model RS Cosworth was - and is - the dream car for many. It also helped make the Sierra attractive as a family car, used car and robbery car. The predecessor Ford Taunus "Knudsen" has been forgotten by most people. One of the reasons is that there are almost none left. In the South of France, cars are not as exposed to rust as at home. Like the Sierra, Taunus were popular for many years – also as youth cars. Most were 2- or 4-door. The best of them all was this coupe model. I also took a picture of one Jaguar XK8, a model that succeeded the XJ12. The XK8 was the first series-produced Jaguar with a V8 engine, developed as a real Jaguar but put into production shortly after Ford took over.

Special French

Renault 4CV in the company of other Frenchmen from the same era

A red one Renault 4CV is in the center – to the right of one Panhard PL17. These were common cars in the 50s, but not as common today. A red Renault 4CV must have been a great car to own. The successor Renault Dauphine there are more of them on hits like this, but very rarely Gordini like the car in the picture. It also has the special Aerostable damper solution based on air-filled rubber cushions. Panhard 24 is the last Panhard passenger car that was made. It came in two versions – Berlina and a shorter Coupé. The pictured model is a BT - Berlina with the Tigre engine.

Misc

I heard the ice blue sports car when it arrived. It sounded unmistakably like a Renault Dauphine, but I had never seen such a car before. And quite rightly so babysitter a Dauphine engine in it. But the brand? Willys Interlagos? Was it a Renault in disguise? The owner explained that this is actually an Alpine A108 manufactured "overtime" in Brazil under his own name. Now it has been taken "back" to France. The A108 is a stunningly beautiful car! Under the Miscellaneous tab, I also include a red one Alfa Romeo Alfasud TI. I don't know much about the car, but Alfasud is rare to see. They were known to rust very easily and are rare in our latitudes. In the end, I had to bring a leaker Volkswagen 1300.

Classics at a street party

Fill up your senses

When the shops organize street parties for customers and residents with music, food and drink, the stage is set for a high atmosphere. The theme was Fill up your senses, or something like that. This is where the cars came into the picture. The street from the early 1900th century forms a nice backdrop for vintage cars of all ages. The cars on display belonged to members of CRAC66 – Club Auto Rétro Catalogne 66.

Visual and beautiful

We walk down the street and find great cars like the Sunbeam Alpine, a Bugatti Replika, Citroen 11CV, Volkswagen bubble, Renault Caravelle, Ford Capi mk1, Renault 4 GTL and a Volkswagen Golf 2 GTI. We are located in Rue Saint-Ferreol, one of the main streets in the French town of Céret at the foot of the Pyrenees. Join the street party!

Hobby vehicle day in Hof

A hobby vehicle can be so many things. After seeing the selection that came to Hof Skole on Sunday, it could be anything from a restored Puch moped to "Gems" military truck.

Court meeting

Hof is located midway between Drammen and Grenland. For many, a nice car trip along nice country roads. And many people visited. There was a wide range both in type of vehicles and type of people. I saw families for several generations, and I think that many made the trip to Hobby Vehicle Day for social gatherings and picnics in the sun - and not least for the drive itself in a fun car that you don't normally drive.

So many vehicles!

It is ADCD – American Cars Drivers Club Vestfold - who is the organizer, but the meeting is open to all types of vehicles. Although there is no sorting or grouping of the vehicles, I see which cars appeal to different people. Cool youth cars with big engines and wide rims for the young. Nostalgia cars from the 60s and 70s for the elderly. Hotrods for car builders. Tractors and lorries for those who have proper sheds. Then there are cars that no one has seen before - which have been brought in from the US or another country just for fun. A high "fun factor" is perhaps the most important reason for acquiring a hobby vehicle?

At car meets like this, you can't bring all the cars. I have concentrated on walking closely so as not to bring too many people along. I have taken more photos than those published in this post. If you have a large screen, the images can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Nash 600

A fascinating car that was ahead of its time in many respects in 1949. Light, low and streamlined with closed wheel arches to get as many miles as possible out of the gas drops. It is equipped with an in-line six and three-speed gearbox.

DKW Sonderklasse 3=6

On the rear fender is written "3=6" to remind that DKW's 3-cylinder two-strokes offered the same advantages as 6-cylinder vehicles. A claim that can be debated. But the forerunner of today's Audi is a beautiful, well-constructed and solid car.

Madness Powered Mustang

Not only is it yellow - like "Lillegul" - but, like the film legend, has also visited Madness Power on Dal. Inside, I notice the same type of gear lever that rally drivers use when shifting sequentially. This is not only a Mustang for old nostalgics, but also a driving machine.

MG Midget

Classic MGs are an example of how you can have fun without driving fast. You don't even have to break the speed limit. The Midget in the picture has BMC's 1100 engine. They could also be had with the 1275 engine or the 1500.

Ford 20M P7A

We have written a lot about the Ford P7A (also called P7/1) here at Terje's cars, - but we have no photos of Turnier (also called station wagon). This is a 20M 2000 S with a 2-liter V6 engine. A notice on vegvesen.no reveals that this is also a Norwegian car.

Two desirable Fords

An Escort mk1 does not only appeal to old car nostalgics. Many car enthusiasts who were born long after the model went out of production have Escort on their wish lists. If you get your hands on a 1,1-litre driven by your grandmother, you can put in a new drivetrain based on a modern 2-litre which makes the light car very fun to drive. Next to the Escort was a Ford 17M (P7B) RS Hardtop with a 2000 V6. Note the registration number BC10001. The new numbers came in 1971 and it may be that Ford's head office in Kolbotn - where the BC plates belong - took the opportunity to get a special registration number. They didn't get BC10000. It went to an MGB.

Golf 1 series 1

Golf 1s are becoming rare - especially the cars from the first series - before the facelift in 1979. The chrome strip that frames the grill and the chrome surrounds on the bumpers are clear signs that it is a Series 1.

Opel GT

A street racer that caused a stir among everyone who had a taste for cars and driving. We have wrote about the Opel GT earlier but had no proper pictures. We got that now.

Mini Convertible

Classic Mini is, after all, very suitable as a hobby vehicle. There are several conversion kits for the Mini. We have seen a corresponding solution. Like the convertible, the Mini is an ideal hobby vehicle with a high "fun factor".

Ford Mustang II

We have many pictures of Mustangs, but almost none of Mustangs generation 2. They are rare. The scaled-down model that arrived in 1974 was long considered a second-rate Mustang – primarily because it was introduced without the option of a V8 engine. Fortunately, it came later. The car in the picture is registered with a 5.0-litre V8 and is the first time it has been registered in Norway. I started driving when the Mustang II came on the market. It was that model which was mentioned in the car magazines at the time, - and consequently not to avoid that it became a car that I - and certainly more than me - dreamed of owning.

Pontiac grand prix

The Pontiac Grand Prix also received mention in the car magazines around the latter half of the 70s. It was brought into Norway, but I don't remember by whom. Maybe Bergheim? A look in the vehicle register shows that several 76 and 77 models were first registered in Norway.

Volvo 242 L

The first Volvo models with the slanted nose are no longer a common sight. It is not particularly difficult to find earlier editions of the 140 series or later editions of the 240 from the 80s onwards. I know for sure that Swedish cars - both Volvo and Saab - rusted terribly around 1977 - usually in places where you normally never experience rust. The explanation could be that bad steel was used. It is therefore especially nice to see an early 240 again.

Opel Commodore 2,8 GS/E

This was the crème de la crème of Opel in the 70s. The cars with 2,8 liter sixes with electronic injection have become popular import cars to Norway - like the Ford 26M. These are relatively rare cars also on the continent.

Ford A, V8 and Hotrods

It is rare to see so many old Ford projects as here at Hoftreffet. Ford A original, or with flattop V8 or without fenders - or converted to hot rod. There are long traditions for rebuilding old Fords, so a hotrod project is to the highest degree car culture. I myself come from inner Vestfold and remember well that there were disused Ford A models all around the farms. It is probably these that have now been given new life as hobby vehicles.

Photo Sunday – Youngtimers

Sunday morning, holiday time - and calm on the roads. If you have seen a grey-haired cyclist around the parking lot on the swimming beaches around Oslo, it could be me. May I take a picture of your car?

Google

One of the concepts of this website is to show pictures and data of car models that you might not see every day. Being able to display different versions and variants of the same model is useful for anyone looking for information. Our images appear in Google and other search engines. But for that the to happen, the pictures must heap. This is where the man on the bike comes in.

The images in this post are already archived under the respective model pages on the website and complete the scope. You will find them together with thousands of other images in The car catalog.

Scratches in the paint?

I met it on the way into town. The E9 series is BMW's most beautiful. It represents the best BMW could deliver from my own childhood and youth. A car that was made for "keen drivers" who wanted to cover long distances quickly and comfortably. In my eyes, it signaled driving pleasure rather than status. A car for connoisseurs.

It's not often you get to see a BMW 2800 CS. On the way back I made my way to the beach and got a snapshot of this beautiful car in the summer sun. By the way, have you noticed the advertising campaign Cary? In one of the commercials you can see another great BMW E9, namely Jan Erik Bjerkholt's BMW 3,0 CS. It was discovered here on "Terje's cars" and got the main role in one of the enjoyable film clips called "Scratch in the paint" from Cary. Watch it here on BMW E9.

Cary

Cary is a new chain within glass, paint and car care. When I popped into Esso in Ramstad, I saw that a Cary workshop had been established at Naka Autosport. Outside was a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280 SLC for sale. The SLC is the SL Coupé – an extended version of the R107. The wheelbase has been stretched by 36 cm so that you get a full-fledged 5-seater. From the front and rear it looks similar to the SL, but from the side it looks like a coupé variant of the S-Class W116 of the time. The SLC was then also taken out of production at the same time as the W116.

As a veteran and hobby car, the closed coupe is not as desirable as the R107 roadster, which was delivered with both a hardtop and canopy. On the website Mercedes-Benz SL R107 we have collected many pictures of the R107 SL but had none of the C107 SLC. When I was allowed to study Tommy Martinsen's 450 SL up close a couple of weeks ago, I got to see how solid these cars are. Real Benz feeling through and through.

Eternal life

I have photographed two completely different models with eternal life - the Ford Mustang mk1 and the air-cooled Porsche 911. They are built to last and therefore there are many of them. So many that you can only take pictures of the finest. I only take pictures when I find something special - without being able to point out what is special on the fly.

On the Kadettangen near Sandvika, I spotted a blue Ford Mustang Hardtop with a white vinyl roof. According to the chassis number, it was produced with a 200 ci straight six. I don't know if it's sitting there today, but at least it went very well. There is something real and authentic about the car - as if taken straight out of an American film. Mustangs are popular advertising objects. Some of the Mustangs we have previously photographed on the page Ford Mustang 1, has featured in advertisements and brochures.

Seaplane Harbor

Sjøflyhavna kro in Fornebu is a favorite destination for people with finer classic cars such as air-cooled Porsches. I take fewer pictures of older 911s now. There are simply too many of them. According to the VIN number, this lowered 911 is a 1980 model, but the bumpers could be taken from a later model, like the 964. Classic Porsche look that looks very good, especially with the Cessna seaplane in the background. In terms of style, the funky buildings at Sjøflyhavna in the background also fit in well.

Shooting brake

Over the years, many strange station wagons have appeared. The recipe seems to be simple. You take an existing sedan, extend the roof and insert a couple of side windows and a rear door. But sometimes it can be really delicious.

One example is Ferrari FF. I took a picture of one a couple of weeks ago, but didn't manage to show the most important part, namely the rear section. I got that last Sunday from a great Jaguar XJS Lynx Eventer. Enjoy the view. A total of 67 cars were built, of which 18 were cars with the steering wheel on the left side. Of these, 2 must have Norwegian plates.

Among station wagons, it can be said that the Volvo 240 Manor House represents a completely different line from the Ferrari FF and XJS Eventer. Nevertheless, the Volvo 240 gets more clicks than the Ferrari on WordPress and Instagram. I came across a 245 with the little rise that extends like a V from the grill to the back of the hood. Small details distinguished different models and variants. The elevation on the bonnet indicates that there is a B23 engine in the car. Black door handles and black areas around the side windows tell us that we are dealing with one of the very last vintages.

Jeremy Clarkson narrates that the Volvo 240 – which originates from the 140 series – should compete with antique cars such as the Austin Cambridge back in the 60s. Many years later, the Volvo 240 sold better than the technically far more advanced Citroen XM. We do not have any photos of Austin Cambridge. It must have been a yawn in automotive history. The Citroen XM, on the other hand, has written itself into history a long time ago. Nevertheless, I felt that the XM station wagon I took a picture of in front of the old Rikstrygdeverk building did not seem very old. Is there anything to take a picture of, then? But on further reflection, the XM is not a car you see very often anymore.

Photo Sunday - cars on display along the road

Sunday morning is a good day for cycling

Then it is calm and peaceful along the roads. Last Sunday I took pictures of cars on display outside car shops in Billingstad. Not just any cars – but cars that had something special about them. Bentley Arnages, for example, are rare even in London's snobby precincts. They certainly arouse curiosity. How much does one like that cost? What kind of engine does it have? You don't need a price tag on the route. You have a mobile phone and can search for the car on "Finn.no" or on the car dealership's own website. A kind of modern window shopping. Join the trip!

The space outside car dealerships is an excellent place to display special cars. They can then attract car enthusiasts.

Underrated sports car in Norway. "Not a real Porsche" - "Porsche for those who can't afford a 911", and so on. The fact is that this is the only Porsche model with a mid-mounted engine – a car designed to provide lots of driving pleasure.

Big and bulky like an elephant, but interesting in a hybrid version. That makes the car more affordable - if you can use such a word about a Bentley. Range of the batteries is stated to be 39 km (WLTP). The car has 4 separate luxury chairs - i.e. a 4-seater for 4 top managers.

Sunday was not as warm as had been predicted. The sun shone with its absence. Then it was nice to move outside and it was good photo weather. I got to air both the pedal bike and the dog for a few hours this day. I also spotted some really nice cars in Kunstnergaten.

Fornebu has its own street by the old flight tower, called Kunstnergaten. Since I don't know anything about art, I often feel a bit stupid when I go there. But it's a nice place with nice people. On Sunday, "everything" is open to the public. Occasionally there is a great car outside the car museum Culture on wheels. The people who run the museum are themselves car enthusiasts who occasionally bring one of their own gems with them.

Today, several fine youngtimers and vintage cars were parked in the street outside the car museum. As one of the participants said - "When all meetings are cancelled, you'd rather arrange a joint drive". In addition to culture in the form of cars, memorabilia from the early days of flight, arts and crafts, you will find the Odonata restaurant with a nice patio. The restaurant was used for filming the first season of the TV program "First date". But you can of course stop by even if you are not on a date.

Shoots at everything

I use a one-handed compact camera from Sony - RX100M3. It is a top model that can be used with one hand and takes very good pictures - good lenses and good software. It is a camera that many journalists use. You can work quickly and shoot at everything. That's what I do. But here I only show pictures of cars.

The images taken in connection with car collisions or carspotting along the road are also eventually loaded into the car catalogue here on the blog. The purpose is to collect photos of cars to show how different car models are developed through the model years - and to show different colors and variants of the same model. Everything is easily accessible on the search engines. There are thousands of photos of special cars "spotted" on trips by car, bicycle, dog-on-leash...
