Built for fine replica cars

In Spain, a police force made up of several units has taken action against a small company that built replicas of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. They arrested 3 men, closed the shop and will now destroy the cars that have not yet been sold.

Raid on fake supercars

It is not prohibited to build and sell replica cars in the EU. Nor should there have been any secrecy around the business at the small industrial area outside Sils, south of Girona. A reader's post in the local online newspaper says that people have been welcome to see the production from the inside. As the donnings were completed, they were posted online - as replicas - nothing else. There is actually a popular market for replicas, like this one.

The fight against piracy

This case actually began in Benidorm, where the police received a report of a Ferrari replica - a replica that was so well made that it could be mistaken for an original. It had authentic details, such as instrument dials, decals and logos. The car was traced to the skilled replica builders in Sils. Should a replica be for like the original, the police are forced to react. In the EU, all piracy is severely cracked down on. Many a shop owner with fake Louis-Vuitton bags and Rolex watches in the back room has experienced the.

The police's own video clips show various donor cars, including the Toyota Celica, Peugeot RCZ or 406 coupé, Ford Probe and Pontiac Fiero. It is far from any standard replica kit that is used, - here the cars are shaped in an almost artistic way. The police's discovery of pre-printed emblems, logos, instrument backgrounds and leather details are decisive evidence in the allegation of piracy.

The price tag on finished cars is over €40. You don't get that much Ferrari for that, not even in Spain - but the sum still amounted to a decent car.

Front engine and front wheel drive. Here a 2,5 V6, probably in a Ford Probe donor car.

How cool is that?

The engine - which is supposed to be V8 or V12, is just fake - like a backdrop. The proper engine is installed in front of. We see, among other things, a 1,8 liter Toyota VVT-i engine, a Ford Duratec 2,5 V6 and a 2 liter Peugeot engine – transverse engines driving the front wheels. The Toyota Celica, Ford Probe and Peugeot 406 Coupe are decent cars to drive, but of course provide a completely different driving experience than the Italian dons with mid-mounted engines.

The replicas to be in any case, surprisingly real looking, and they is heard actually looks like a Ferrari. Sufficient to enjoy the admiring glances of the public. Then it may not help that the driving experience is not quite as it should be.

- Would you let yourself be deceived?

Or how about a sprightly Peugeot engine?
Decent body parts.

Watch the police video from the "scene".

With a curb weight of around 600 kilograms and 136 horses, the Caterham 7 is a typical sports car.

Now the sports cars show up!

Imagine a whole field full of Porsches, then another with Mercedes, one with BMWs, one with Japs cars, one with Americans, - and the entire audience area full of Italian and English cars. That's the impression you get when you visit Norsk Sportsvogn Klubb's annual spring rally at Øvrevoll Gallopbane. I didn't manage to watch more than a fraction before the show was over. There is no point in lying in bed in the morning if you want to see all the cars.

I have placed the pictures consecutively in alphabetical order with Alfas, Ferraris, Jaguars, Lotuses, MGBs, and more, and commented under each picture.

Culture on a Sunday

What do you think of when someone says culture?

ferrari-308-gtb-5

Opera? Art? Good wine?

At the old lighthouse on Fornebu is the museum "Culture on wheels". It is a small museum with cars, bicycles, mopeds, motorbikes and windpipes - and Norway's largest collection of Vespas. Private objects are exhibited, and the selection is constantly changing.

ferrari-308-gtb-3When it comes to culture, it is impossible to avoid Italy. Nor here.
My eyes fall on a red Ferrari 308 that looks like it's taken straight from "Magnum PI", you know that series where Tom Selleck plays a private detective who drives around Hawaii in a red Ferrari. But the was a targa (GTS). The Ferrari at Fornebu has a fixed roof (GTB).

I mean to have heard that the 308 is not considered a proper Ferrari. The story can actually be found here at the museum. Next to it stands the origin, a grey-green Dino 308 GT4. "3" for 3 liters and "8" for 8 cylinders. Named after Ferrari's son, Dino, because they did not dare to use the Ferrari name. This is a 2+2 seater with matching brown interior. The similarity to the Magnum-308 is striking. The interior still smells classy. This is sufficient, although some claim that a proper Ferrari should have a V12.

I also stop at a red 1991 Honda NSX, one of the few that was imported to Norway. I remember well when the NSX came on the market. I read the tests in British CAR magazine and American Motor Trend. My dream was created. I think the price tag was 1,2 million here at home. That was a lot for a Honda. When I see the three supercars in the same room, there is no doubt that the NSX is on its way to becoming a classic in any case.

ferrar-308-gtb-9The truly Italian thing about this museum is the Vespa collection. About twenty Vespas from all eras stand gleaming after painstaking renovation where everything is original. Some of the scooters are new. I recognize some from the early seventies. I greet Tom Arheim who I believe is Norway's foremost expert on Vespas in Norway. He owns no less than 14 of the scooters in the room. "These", says Arheim, "are scooters to be renovated", and points to two original, rather shabby bicycles in one corner. He shows me the workshop where a new Vespa is being transformed into a piece of jewelry.

I see on my driver's license that I can drive a light motorcycle up to 125 cubic meters.

Wondering if I should look a little closer at a Vespa 125?

Along the streets of Rome

Today, the Nuova 500 is the old 500.
Today, the Nuova 500 is the old 500.

Join us on a quick trip to Rome and see what you can find along the streets there!

The Fiat 500 is made for cities like Rome. You see them everywhere. Not only the new editions, but also surprisingly many of the old "Nuova 500" - the model that appeared in 1957 and replaced the popular "musa". It is perhaps an exaggeration to say that the Fiat 500 from the period 1957-1975 lives in Best going well. Many are in rather poor condition after having lived for several decades in Rome's relentless traffic and senseless parking culture.

Seen in the light of posterity, it is clear that Fiat 500s built between 1957-1975 have been good cars. The simple is the best - and has the longest shelf life. It is not as easy to produce Polish-built successors such as the Fiat 126 and the horribly ugly one Five hundred. The very latest Fiat 500 is also built in Poland. Will it last as long on the road as its model, the Nuova 500, do you think?

I think a successful design contributes to a car model staying on the streets for a long time, such as the Nuova 500, - and perhaps today's model.

You don't exactly think that the 500 of our time is a big car, but compared to the Nuova 500 it actually looks big, not to mention the Countryman in the background. The pictured Nuova 500 is a manufacturer after 1972.

rome-cars-79

One of the old 500's big advantages is that they can be parked across. Here a beautiful model from around 1970.

Many of the old 500s are in the same condition as this one, which comes from Agrigento in the south. Previous repairs with steel plastic and frequent dents.

The front bears witness to a lot of physical contact at previous parking lots. The problem is that newer cars' bumpers hit over the 500's bumpers.
