Mercedes-Benz

For generations, the cars have been considered among the world's best in terms of quality and durability. Since 2019, Mercedes-Benz is a company under Daimler AG.

Few car models can look back on 46 years of continuous production. Now Mercedes-Benz has presented a special edition of its G-Class with associations with the early years, called "Stronger than the 1980s".

Few car models have as long a history as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. When the 500000th car was to be presented to the public in 2023, they rolled out a car with a 1980s look, in the same color as the very first cars in Agave green solid with orange indicators and a contemporary roof rack. It was a W463 disguised as an earlier W460 – the only one of its kind ever made.

A tribute to the W460

A modern G-Class in W460 livery was not only a successful celebration of half a million cars – it also created demand. Now the car is coming in limited production – 460 cars (of course) will be produced in three classic 80s colors, Agave green solid, Cream solid and Colorado beige solid. The colors are part of the Mercedes-Benz MANUFAKTUR department where standard cars are individualized with effects – here with effects from the 1980s.

The details that matter

The first things you notice are the classic front, colors from the 1980s color chart, orange turn signals and 5-spoke aluminum wheels from the first cars. If you go closer, you can find the old Mercedes-Benz logo with a deciduous berry on the hood. At the back, you can find the classic MERCEDES-BENZ sign at the bottom right of the rear door. The seats are modern, but the seat cover is in a checked gray fabric that was very popular in the 80s.

Backdated

The term "backdated" (taken from Porsche) is probably a good enough description for the special G-Class cars. Under the skin, of course, there are modern cars – either based on the G450d or G500. Even though they are based on modern cars, the period details attract the attention of anyone who experienced the first model series W460.

Prices

In Germany, the price will be around €160000 before extras. Here, you should really consider ordering the nice, contemporary roof rack.

For comparison: Here is an early, short version of the Mercedes-Benz Gelanderwagen from Steyr Magna in Graz, Austria. As a curiosity, the edition "Stronger than the 1980s" has a plaque that says "Schöckl Proved" from Steyr's test track in the Schöckl mountain.

Concept car for 100 million

1996 Mercedes-Benz F200 "Imagination". Photo: Terje's cars

There is only one of this Mercedes-Benz F200 "Imagination". It was built as a concept car, presented at the Paris motor show in 1996, then put in a museum and later sold for an incredible NOK 100 million!

The purpose of concept cars like this is to showcase and test new ideas on the public. Often it's about pure style studies - cars to be seen but not driven. The Daimler-Benz concept car was not just a style study – it was packed with new features technology. The biggest news was that the steering wheel and pedals were replaced with joysticks. Today, one can safely say that it was a dead end. Joysticks work well on game consoles, but even die-hard "gamers" would feel unsafe in a real car without a steering wheel and pedals. Daimler-Benz launched the joystick solution under the name "Sidesticks". The car driver had two joysticks – one on each side – in the driver's door and on the center console. The F200 concept car was also equipped with Sidesticks for the passenger. A bizarre solution that can resemble an airplane cockpit.

Well, the joystick was a dead end, but the solution from 1996 actually showed a completely unique, complete and working drive-by-wire concept. With joysticks, this technology became very visible.

Several of the innovations in the F200 "Imagination" are considered modern even in today's cars - such as headlights with variable distribution of the amount of light, electro-controlled hydropneumatic suspension (Active Body Control), mirrors replaced by monitors, voice recognition (Linguatronic) and digital dashboard. Other innovations were airbag curtains, which were not yet common in 1996. Furthermore, the F200 could offer future-oriented and cool solutions such as hydraulic scissor doors and a glass roof with electrically controlled blinding.

A feasibility study

The Mercedes-Benz F200 “Imagination” Coupé was, as the name suggests, a feasibility study of new technology. The confirmation that the technology was possible was proven by the fact that all innovative solutions worked in practice. The car was - and still is - fully drivable.

First museum, then sold

I saw the car for the first time at Mercedes-Benz World in England in 2018. Before that, judging by the photos, it was probably on display at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart. After my first encounter with the car, it has been exhibited at the London Concours, and it will now be privately owned. The sale price was just under 10 million dollars, i.e. 100 million Norwegian kroner. An unfathomable sum that may turn out to be a good investment. The car is both unique and historic - and no slouch with a 6,0 liter V12 engine. In any case, this can never be a car you can use on a daily basis. Who dares to take such an expensive car out into London traffic and maneuver it with Sidesticks instead of a steering wheel and pedals?

My first impressions of the car were not overwhelming. It was not particularly well placed for photography, partially hidden by tape and a poster, as well as an open boot lid where the lid was raised in a horizontal position so that the car's fine lines were broken.

Created rumors

When the car was shown to the public, it bore the registration number “SCL600”. This led the automotive press to speculate whether the next generation S CL 600 would be offered with joystick steering, which was not well received in the social media of the time. The new CL class (C215) was then launched 2 years later without the beautiful glass roof and without joystick control. But Daimler-Benz had not given up on the idea. In 1998, they showed off an SL 500 (R129) with "Sidesticks" - a prototype which was placed in a museum after a short time.

In terms of design, one can sense the line following the F200 "Imagination" in the CL class that came in 1998. But the concept car also gives clear associations to another Mercedes-Benz model that was launched at the same time as the F200, namely the small sports car SLK (R170).

When the W140 ended up in the history books

The S-Class model that no one wants.

Source: Netflix – The Crown

In the 6th season of The Crown, we get to follow Lady Diana on the last, fateful day that would end in tragedy and sorrow. That the accident happened in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140 will follow this model forever.

No ordinary Sunday trip

Hotel Ritz was not prepared for the big visit. The paparazzi got in, so Dodi and Diana decided to spend the night in one of Al Fayed's apartments in Paris - just a few minutes' drive away. To escape the paparazzi, two cars were lined up in front of the main entrance - including a Range Rover with Dodi's permanent driver. The car the couple was going to use was a hired "regular" Mercedes-Benz S-Class 280 S which was parked in a side street to the hotel. The plan was to sneak out of the car unnoticed, but the paparazzi spotted them and followed along Rivoli Street against Concord Square. At the roundabout, the pursuers saw that the Mercedes skidded heavily as the driver gave full throttle to shake them off. Seconds later, the car went down the underpass. Several witnesses could hear the bang and the sound of the horn being on.

PARIS, FRANCE - NOVEMBER 2ND 2013: Cars entering and leaving the Pont de l'Alma tunnel where on the 31st August 1997, Princess Diana was fatally killed in a car crash. The walls of the tunnel are now covered in messages of condolence and remembrance (taken 2nd November 2013).

The 13th pillar where the accident happened. Source: Google Maps

How could 3 people die in a modern prestige car?

Well, the driver had a blood alcohol level of 1,5 when the car hit the 13th concrete pillar diagonally towards the driver's side at an assumed speed of 105 km/h. The lifeguard was the only one of the 4 on board who used a seat belt - and who survived. Several British doctors have stated that Lady Diana would have had a better chance of survival if rescuers had taken her to hospital sooner rather than trying to stabilize her condition. The doctor on the scene did not understand that Diana had internal injuries. Therefore, it was decided that they should carry Dodi out before her, despite the fact that he had already been declared dead. Once inside the ambulance, it became unclear which hospital could accept her. It would be two hours before she arrived Hôpital de la Pitié Salpêtrière.

Several decades after the accident, new scapegoats are constantly being pointed out. The conditions mentioned here were not only critical for the outcome, but can also shed light on whether there is reason to criticize the vehicle involved.

Information has subsequently come to light that the car used on the trip had previously been involved in several accidents - the last so serious that experts believe the car should have been condemned. But first let's take a closer look at what kind of model it is.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior

1994 Armored Mercedes-Benz S280

The car was 3 years old. Judging from the pictures, I think it is a facelifted model produced as model year 1995. The car normally weighs 1850 kg. What the armored version weighs depends on the degree of armor used. By comparing a newer, armored S-Class against a standard car, I have come to a weight increase of 700 kg. An armored W140 can therefore weigh well over 2,5 tonnes without a driver. A standard car can accelerate from 0-100 in 10,8 seconds and reach a top speed of 215 km/h, but an armored car will probably not be as fast and not as manageable. It is also worth mentioning that the Mercedes had ESP and airbags for driver and passenger. The S-Class of the time could also be supplied with side airbags, but I can't see any in the pictures.

Should have been condemned

The car was rented from the limousine company Etoile Limousines, because the hotel's own cars were occupied, among other things lined up to mislead the paparazzi. In 2017 - exactly 20 years after the accident - it became known through a current affairs program on the French TV channel M6 that the car in the fatal accident must have been involved in accidents in the past. In the last accident, it had been stolen and ended up as a wreck after doing several rounds. The car was first condemned, but later repaired by a mechanic who sold it on to Etoile Limousines. At least one of the drivers had complained that the car was not in drivable condition. He believed that it became unstable when accelerating hard at speeds above 60 km/h. The TV program had engaged an expert who, together with a representative of the insurance company, had considered that the repairs should not have been carried out - the car should have been condemned.

The wreck was, of course, thoroughly examined to see if any work had been carried out that could weaken the vehicle. Neither French nor British investigators scrutinized the car's history.

Mercedes-Benz W140 series 2

Was it really the driver's fault?

Shouldn't an experienced driver be able to steer a heavy Mercedes through the underpass even at speeds of around 120-130 km/h despite the fact that the speed limit on the spot was 50 km/h? If the previous driver(s) claim were true, the instability could occur inside the underpass, perhaps when the driver eased off the gas. If you have an instability - for example trailer loads with planks - the danger signals will not come on until you have picked up speed. The descent to the underpass combined with high speed may also have destabilized the vehicle after it has "taken the ground" and "bounced" a little up into the turn. Since the driver had a high blood alcohol level, they blamed him instead of trying to find out how an undamaged Mercedes would behave at a similar speed on the spot.

Did the car slam as it should?

The impact was so powerful that the radiator was pushed into the passenger compartment – actually into the driver's body. And why couldn't the rescue team open - or break open the doors? They had to cut the roof and drag the rear seat passengers up into the back. This was one of the reasons why Lady Diana was late on the operating table.

A damaged rennommé?

Daimler AG has never made any statements regarding the accident - nor regarding the claims that appeared in 2017 that the accident car should have been condemned. Shortly after the accident, CNN speculated whether the accident would affect Mercedes-Benz as a car brand. The following year, the W220 – the next S-Class launched – was a favorable ten point for Daimler, while demand for the W140 must have fallen considerably. As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that the most expensive W140 in history would have been the accident car. If it had come up for sale, the estimated price would be £10 million.

It may not be talked about too much, but the W140 lost its star in the tragic accident, because who would ever use it as a wedding car?

Made for America

450 sl
From the fishing pier at Lervik

In the 70s, it was not "just" to export cars to the USA. The American authorities had introduced strict requirements for exhaust gas cleaning and bumpers that should withstand small collisions. The solution was own USA models. Now many have returned to Europe.

Mercedes-Benz's third edition of the SL class became very popular in the USA. It had a V8 engine and could easily be converted from a hardtop to a softtop. Due to stricter safety requirements, American car manufacturers could no longer produce open cars. The last American-built "convertible" for many years was to be the 1976 model of the Cadillac Eldorado. But Americans who loved to drive without a roof could choose the Mercedes-Benz SL instead – if they could afford it.

Mercedes-Benz 450 SL

We had agreed to take a closer look at one of Tommy Martinsen's cars – a 450 SL with large American bumpers and lots of chrome. In the fine July weather, the coastal area between Saltnes and Engelsviken offers a true Southern idyll. To get a good frame around the pictures, we drove out to the fishing pier at Lervik. Previously, there were fish sales in the stalls when the fishing boats came in. Today, there are not as many fishing boats there, but leisure boats. Local people meet and bathing youngsters cool off by "taking a bomb" from the jetty.

Tommy's Mercedes did really well in the maritime environment. The interior is in blue tones and is color coordinated with the exterior color "Grey Blue". The wheel caps are in the same colour. The previous owner insisted on keeping the car original. Shiny wheel arches, shiny door sills and chrome in the door panels look great and bring to mind a real American. The caps and chrome date the car to the 70s. It was first registered on an unknown date in 1974, but the color code and serial number indicate that it is a 1975 model.

One of the longest-lived models of all time

The model was introduced as a 1971 model and produced until model year 1989. Few models have been in production for as long. The USA version was not ready until 1972. At first it was sold as the 350 SL, while in reality it had a 4,5 liter V8. Mercedes-Benz had to make some changes to the engine management - which, together with the catalytic converter, meant that you could not extract as much power as in the European models. From 1974, the US models also received the designation 450 SL - but still with lower performances than corresponding European cars.

X

The SL model with the type designation R107 was made in three different series. Our car belongs to the first series that was produced from model year 1972 through 1980. It received a couple of additional changes in 1974 to meet new requirements from the US authorities. "The Federal Bumper Standard" made it necessary to create completely new bumpers. In addition, the V8 had to be further tuned down – from 190 HP to 180 HP. For comparison, equivalent European versions of the engine produced 224 HP.

lervik

X

In 1981, the SL model inherited components from the then brand new S-Class (W126), among other things, the suspension and brakes were upgraded. It got the S-Class' new 380 V8 engine. The engine made the car lighter, but to adapt to American requirements for exhaust gas purification - it had to be tuned down to 155 HP. The automatic cash register got 4 steps.

X

When Mercedes-Benz renewed the S-Class for the 1986 model year, the 380 engine was dropped from the model range because the market demanded engines with lower consumption. The SL models in the USA then got the 560 engine from the S-class instead. This too was detuned compared to European models, but still produced a decent 227 HP.

The original equipment

You will find the car's equipment codes on the data plate which, on our car, is screwed into the body in front of the radiator. You can find what the codes mean online. Our car was equipped with the following when it left the factory:

513 – Becker Europe radio.
531 – Auto antenna
585 – Behr aircon and electric windows
593 – Green tinted windows
636 – Omission of warning triangle (!)
466 – Central locking
491 – USA version

Original or customized

It is a matter of taste and pleasure. Should you keep the car's original character or modernize it? And how many changes can be made before the "Benz feeling" disappears? In the 80s came Lorinser with styling equipment for SL – tasteful, stylish and expensive. For some reason it seems to fit best with later models. If you have an early model, it should be originally equipped - possibly with additional equipment of the time, such as Mercedes-Benz's iconic Bundt/baroque rims. An old Becker radio in the dashboard also contributes to a good Benz feeling, although some have been installed just for the sake of appearance - with a hidden modern system in addition.

What should you watch out for on the US model?

When importing vintage cars from the USA, the owner must provide technical information to the vehicle register. This means that over the years many errors have unfortunately been punched into the register - a problem that does not only affect classic Mercedes-Benz models. A common mistake is that US models are registered with performances equivalent to European models. Then the stated number of horses can be far more than what you get in reality. It does not play a major role in the use value, but destroys the car's history.

Peace

One of the reasons why many cars are imported from the USA is low mileage and little or no rust due to a hot and dry climate or storage in a garage. The model is not particularly susceptible to rust. Most prone to rust are the cars before 1976. After that they got better steel. From 1980 the bodies were waxed and from 1986 many parts were galvanized. Any rust appears in the usual places.

Known errors that may accompany the model

High durability that can withstand high mileage characterizes the model. There are a couple of known faults with the US models which should be fixed through the car's normal service programme. One rather serious problem is the possibility of subframe breaks on the 350 and 450 SL. This resulted in a voluntary recall where affected owners had the car checked and repaired free of charge through the dealer network. Another known problem is hot start problems which could be traced to the injection system. It is also known that the 380 SL can have problems with the timing chain. The American engines were equipped with one long chain instead of two separate chains that European models had – one for each engine bank. Several American car owners were converted to two chains. Regardless of the model, you should listen for rattles and noises in the register when starting from cold. Although the chains should last 250-320 km on the 000 SL, plastic slide rails can weather and take damage over the years.

But, as I said, if the car has been to a Mercedes-Benz workshop recently, these problems are very likely noted or fixed.

Mercedes-Benz SLK R170

slk
Mercedes-Benz SLK (facelift)

I always have a watchful eye for special cars. A radar in the subconscious maps the surroundings and warns as soon as it detects something "special". It is difficult to put into words what this "special" really is er. It can be a different shape, color, details, sound...

The other day I came across such a phenomenon - along one of the condemned hangars at the Koksa workshop in Fornebu. I took pictures. It was a Calypso green Mercedes-Benz SLK R170 from the first production year of 1997. Normally I don't care about early SLKs - simply because I don't think they are special enough. I would rather go for a CLK (W208) with drivetrain and chassis from the C-Class (W202). The CLK appears as a nicer version of the C-class, while the SLK ended up as...

... neither bird nor fish?

I imagine corporate German engineers tasked by top management to create a model to rival the new BMW Z3. It was an urgent project. Costs had to be kept down. Pure business. Barely Leidenschaft.

r170
SLK R170 before facelift (fv), same model with aftermarket upgrade kit (top fh) and the latest SLK.

A small C-Class-based sports car?

At first I didn't understand what had caught my interest. I started parking next to SLKs. I took pictures. Compared them to the green SLK. Then I saw it. "My" SLK had had its headlights and grill replaced with aftermarket products. The sad, dull, brown and dull Plexiglas had been replaced with fresh, modern spotlights. If you're going to have an SLK, you have to go for it ebay.com and buy new headlights! Maybe order a new grill too, - one similar to other Mercedes. Then your SLK mk1 will look 10 years younger. See the photo montage above - and the similarity between the upgraded R170 and today's SLK.

Rieger kit?

slk
Aftermarket kit that makes the R170 look like the R171. Photo Rieger/bildeler.no
Some have taken it further. They have changed the entire front. Rieger is sold by, among other things Skruvat.no. The front, with associations to the SLK mk2 (R171), dresses "our" R170. Actually, I'm not a big fan of R171. The front with the "beak" fit well with the full-sized SL, but not so well with the short SLK. I think the last SLK (R172) looks the best of them all. Unfortunately, it never achieved the same sales success as its predecessors.

R171 SLK with facelift from 2008 with changed front and rear bumper, grill and exterior mirrors and upgraded engines (Car pictured in Perpignan, France).

Daimler AG recently discontinued the SLK series

From 1997 to 2019, 3 models of SLK were made – R170, R171 and R172. All made according to the same concept: "Sportslich, Leicht und Kurz". Roadsters built from components from associated C-classes. Sports cars that anyone could buy. Today, prices start at R170 from 50 000. Let's take a closer look at what we're getting.

Facelift for the 2001 model

The R170 was made in two series. The first was produced from 1996-2000. The second, a facelifted edition, was produced from model year 2001 to 2004. Visual changes consisted of new plastic under the front grill, new channel skirts painted all the way down, as well as a new lower rear section. Engine-wise, all engines got a compressor. The 2-litre 134 HP without supercharger disappeared from the model range. The entry-level engine was the 200K (compressor) which delivered 163 HP. The 2.3-litre engine – also the one with a compressor – received a power increase from 190 HP to 194 HP. Furthermore, it became possible to order the SLK with the – now classic – 3.2 V6 engine. There are therefore several reasons why you should go for the facelifted model. The biggest is everything you can't see, - a number of changes previously reported as weaknesses.

What to watch out for

Peace

Due to poor steel, all Mercedes around the turn of the century were affected by severe rust. It affected all models from the smallest to the largest. The fresh news came with the 2003 models, i.e. the last year of the R170. Nevertheless, the SLK has fared better than its brothers the CLK (W208) and C-class (W202). Many SLKs were acquired as car number two and perhaps got the place of honor in the garage. When Mercedes-Benz's rust problems became known, many people chose to protect their cars from rust. That does not mean that SLKs are exempt from rust. There are places that are difficult to inspect, including the attachment of front fenders and rear wheel arches. There may also be rust in the C-pillars that hold/attach the roof. One can therefore say that to be you rust, it may be a good idea to avoid any purchases.

r170

Oil leak

Technically speaking, there are no particular problem areas on the SLK. One problem reported by several owners over the years is oil leaks around the solenoid that controls the VVT (variable valve timing) system at the end of the camshaft. Many people have experienced that oil has penetrated the engine's main wiring system. Only from the 2003 models was this fixed in the form of an additional fastening part which can also be retrofitted on older engines (M111 200K and 230K).

High parts prices

The components in the steering, brakes and undercarriage have the same service life as other cars. This means replacements from 100 km and upwards. The problem with a model like the SLK mk000 is Mercedes-Benz's sky-high parts prices. If you follow the dealer's service programme, the bills can be as high as the car is worth. The calculation can become more profitable by shopping for parts online and screwing a bit yourself.

The Vario roof

A final problem is the so-called Vario roof, which opens and closes at the touch of a button. It requires regular use to work. Many people experience malfunctions after winter storage. Faults can occur in microswitches, wiring and the hydraulic pump. It can be time-consuming to troubleshoot and expensive to acquire parts. In the worst case, a repair can cost as much as the car is worth.

Prices

Price overview in Norway and Sweden for models before and after facelift (2001). Swedish prices have been converted to Norwegian kroner, including Norwegian VAT and scrap deposit.

The chart shows Norwegian and Swedish prices for models before and after the facelift. Swedish prices are calculated in Norwegian kroner including Norwegian VAT and scrappage, but excluding shipping. Swedish prices are not particularly favorable, but the selection in Sweden is larger, especially for "low-mileage" models. These are priced just under 100,000 NOK when fully imported to Norway. Expect prices between 50.000 and 80.000 for cars with around 150.000 km. SLKs, like other roadsters, could be considered future classics and will live forever.

Mercedes-Benz C180 Coupé

In front of the old building at Dikemark Hospital.

The car industry has come a long way in creating self-driving and environmentally friendly vehicles. But don't you risk losing the joy of driving? Like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Some people argue that life is too short to drive boring cars. That's why I searched the sharing service Nabobil.no to find a Mercedes-Benz CLA or C-Class with a good petrol engine - one that isn't boring. It is, of course, excessively optimistic to be able to hire a car from private individuals late on Friday evening in order to go on a trip the very next day. First a couple of rejections, then I was accepted to rent a well-equipped C180 Coupé based on the W204. Few make more beautiful coupés than Mercedes-Benz (and BMW). But how exciting is the C180 Coupé?

I set out on a trip to Drammen in connection with the River Festival, lured by the boat race on the river and the amcar exhibition at Nøsted brygge three kilometers south of the city centre. Perfect destinations with a special car – one that is not like any other.

Cool car

Palladium silver metallic, AMG spoiler, side skirts and spoiler lip on the rear lid. Widened wheel arches, 7-spoke AMG rims, LED daytime running lights, panoramic sunroof, AMG steering wheel with paddleshifts. Black headliner, sports seats, interior stitched with red stitching and red seat belts. It ticks a lot of boxes. Coupé gives an immediate sense of luxury. A middle-class car where interior space is sacrificed for design and shape - and the driver's well-being. In many circles considered politically incorrect.

c180
The panoramic glass roof blends in with the rear window. Spoiler lip on the rear lid and side skirts (part of the AMG package).

Sensible technique

On paper, "my" C180 BlueEFFICIENCY is based on a 1,6 liter turbo engine that produces 156 HP and a constant torque of 250 Nm between 1250 and 4000 rpm. The 7G-TRONIC Plus automatic transmission delivers the power to the rear wheels. The same drivetrain is used again in several models, including the A200, CLA200, C180 and E180. A good alternative in view of the announced diesel bans in the big cities.

The automatic transmission has an intelligent lock-up function that locks the engine directly to the drive train through a physical clutch solution in all steps. In locked mode, the engine therefore runs as economically as in a manually-geared car. I am impressed by having good torque at all revs I drive in. From start-up, the drive mode is set to ECO mode. If I try to hit the gas to downshift on the freeway, it's like the software holds back, as if to say: "- Eh, did you really intend to downshift, or were you just a little unsteady on the gas?". There is no problem driving in ECO when the car is thinking. You can choose three driving programs – E(co), M(annual) and S(port). "Sport" only affects the gear changes, not the dampers and steering. According to the car's owner, the fuel consumption on mixed driving is approximately 0,8. I have not measured myself, but I am sure that I have been below that consumption.

On the road

Among the car's equipment codes, I find codes for, among other things, sports suspension and sports steering. The chassis of this car feels fantastic both on the motorway and winding country roads. In my opinion, a good balance between comfort and sport. In fact, a considerable emphasis on comfort, at least at Norwegian speeds. At autostrada speed, I imagine that the car is pressed against the road so that the undercarriage feels a bit tighter - a characteristic that is typical of quality German cars.

The turbo engine does not contribute to giving any sports car feeling. It behaves more like a torquey diesel. Perhaps the most sporty thing is the steering. It seems that there are fewer revolutions between the extremes than what I am used to. The steering works directly without compromising on comfort, and provides fantastic feedback from the wheels.

I took a trip to Dikemark Hospital for a photo shoot along the listed buildings. When you meet the bus in one of the bends above Slottsberget and lean fully into the bend, you can feel exactly how the front wheel takes the rounded asphalt edge. This is driving pleasure.

Spirits in the forest

Dikemark Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Asker. The hospital has always been owned and run by Oslo municipality, but since 2009 has been part of Oslo University Hospital. It is said that there are ghosts around the buildings. I am fascinated by the area – the buildings, the forest and the waters. Fantastically beautiful, especially in autumn. I know the area well after long walks here with the dogs, while my horse-crazy daughter was in a stable nearby. It is said to haunt. Not just inside the buildings but between them – and in the forest. Not so strange when you think about the history of the place. With an open mind, I have never felt the presence of spirits. Not even when I stopped by this weekend.

Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz C180 Coupé is perhaps more of a cruiser than "fast and furious". The engine contributes to this. The car is capable of handling more power, more speed. But the drivetrain is far from bad. If you choose petrol in a Mercedes-Benz today, you will probably end up with the same – or similar – drivetrain. Like the rest of the car industry, Daimler AG continues to downsize its engines. New, downsized engines are now being rolled out together with the new A-class. The bright spot in this development is lower weight, lower emissions and lower one-off tax.

The C180 Coupé is not a boring car, at least not when it is loaded with equipment like in "my" car. Behind the wheel, I sense a high degree of feelgood. Kind of a heavy Benz feel. I also sense a phenomenon that is also present behind the wheel of large Volvos - a feeling of recognition and respect from other motorists. A Mercedes Coupé looks very good on the road. It is special, looks expensive and oozes class.

Photo Saturday – Mustang and Mercedes

Mustang meeting at RøhneSelmer Asker and Bærum

Shelby Mustang GTE

Saturdays in June are good days for photography. Then car meets are organized almost everywhere. In addition, many are out to air their fine car. Then I set off on a trip, - either in a motorized vehicle, or on a trike, like now. I am a car enthusiast, car blogger and car spotter. On nice Saturdays, I like to study nice cars, take pictures of them and publish car stuff online.

The first stop was RøhneSelmer in Billingstad. They organized Mustang get-togethers with country on the stereo and hot dogs on the grill. This is the third year I have visited. Without own Mustang. The space outside was quickly filled up. RøhneSelmer itself has a couple of great cars that they exhibit. Shelby Mustang GTE and Super Snake. The Hottest Mustang Ever!

It is a challenge to take pictures of glossy paint and chrome in broad daylight. You have to find an angle where the sun is not reflected and the shadows do not become too dominant. Another challenge is not to get too many people in the picture, either. Those who do come along should appear in a pose and an expression that they themselves would be able to nod approvingly to. Sometimes I fear that I will photograph someone who is with his mistress from work, at a time when he should actually have been on a sailing trip, - and that his wife will discover him on terjesbiler.no. Anyway, I hope it works out.

Super Mustang

It's not every time you get to study a brand new ShelbyMustang up close. I liked the GTE pictured. I think the Mustang 6 has captured the style of the Mustang 1 in a nice way. It also has the Mustang 5. There are some fantastic versions of them. For example, the one that was voted the public's favourite. A red Cobra convertible. Not the worst vehicle to have when the summer holidays are just around the corner.

Many will probably choose the Mustang 1 as the finest Mustang series. It is impressive to see so many parts available as new - or newly manufactured. The light blue '67 model in the pictures below has been built with a new drivetrain. Ford's 427 (6,8) liter V8. Everything looks brand new. It's fascinating to see how well the over 50-year-old design has held up, despite the absence of computer screens and touch-screens. Analogue clocks apply here.

A great Ferrari 612

mustang
Ferrari 612

On my way out towards Holmen, I spotted a magnificent Ferrari 612 in the car park outside AutoXO. I have published several photos of the Ferrari 612 on terjesbiler.no, but the 612 is such a rare model that I chose to photograph it again. Moreover, it was beautifully "parked solo" against a calm background - and the lighting was just right. As I got into shooting position and got the camera ready, the owner arrived. I felt the situation a bit embarrassing. Why has a gray-haired cyclist positioned himself directly in front of your car in an empty parking lot?

The owner was a gem and offered me to take pictures. I take the liberty of publishing it as well. I only publish pictures of cars liker. The best. And as I drove on towards Holmen, I thought that the beautiful Ferrari made the Mustang GTE look like a Tesla.

Vintage cars on Holmen?

mustang
1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster

I had seen on Facebook that Holmendagen 2018 was being held right now, and that there would be some vintage cars on display. Holmendagen is a kind of family day for residents of the vel'et. The vintage cars were used cars from when I was young myself, including a Volvo Trygge with Frydenlutnd decoration and a Bedford flatbed. It is the same type of distribution van that I myself drove in my younger days. Nostalgic to see how primitive it was inside the cabs. It was difficult to take good pictures.

I still took one photo of a great Jaguar XK140 there. It gives a very special feeling to sit behind the large steering wheel of such a car and look ahead over the bonnet. It's class.

Cadillac Style at Solvik

mustang
Cadillac DeVille 4

On my way back to Oslo, I came across a classic Cadillac at Solvik Båthavn. The car was missing fender skirts, or the owner had chosen to remove them. Other than that, it appeared to be in very good condition and probably hasn't gone very far, either. I note a white Stetson hat on the hat rack and imagine 8-track cassettes with Ella Fitzgerald or Patsy Cline.

Stjerneløpet – Mercedes-Benz arrives in Fornebu

mustang
Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren

When I'm out cycling on nice Saturdays, I stop at places where nice cars can be parked. The area around the old flight tower at Fornebu is such a place. On Saturday, the Stjerneløpet 2018 was held, and Oslo got to see several classic Mercedes-Benzes rolling away in the fine weather. In the afternoon they gathered in Kunstnergaten in Fornebu. There are several art studios and museums there. The old airport buildings go well with the beautiful Mercedes.

The picture above is a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. 5,4 liter V8 with supercharger. A real supercar. I see several cars with license plates from when the cars were new. Several of the cars have probably belonged to the same owner, or the same family over several decades.

Mysterious W100 on Norwegian plates

w100
There, next to a Maybach, was a 600 with Norwegian Telemark signs.

Between the public entrance and the workshop gate in Mercedes-Benz World outside London stand two former prestige cars apparently left to their own fate. One is a Maybach 57, the other a Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100) with Norwegian plates. It has been dropped on the suspension and the rear side window on the right is sealed with plastic, probably after vandalism.

- How did it end up here?

The only Mercedes-Benz 600 with Norwegian roots, is former circus director Arnardo's gold-coloured 600? Should there have been a 600 in original condition hidden in Telemark's forests? It would be a shame if such a car ended up out of the country.

A quick search on vegvesen.no reveals that H-65600 was imported used in 2014 and sold again just before Christmas 2017, - that is, 3 months ago. The car looks great, complete in sheet metal and with an intact interior. The dark green beauty with white curtains may have belonged to an Arab sheikh or a royal in Switzerland. At least now it has been bought back by Daimler AG and transported to Brooklands outside London. I sincerely hope someone has a plan for it before it rots.

In the premises inside, I found a right-hand drive W100 - but no Maybach. I see similarities between the W100 and the Maybach. Although there is more than 30 years between them, I hope that one day they will be able to stand together inside the exhibition building. Perhaps in a separate corner for the world's most luxurious vehicle?

Maybach was never a success

I think the Germans misjudged their customers when they gave the brand its own identity. The cars became too anonymous, like a toned-down S-Class, or even worse, - like a copy made in China. Only one copy ended up in Norwegian hands. Tinius Nagell-Erichsen's Maybach became nationally known after the owner fired his driver after a minor accident. The whole thing ended up as a farce in the media which put neither the car nor the previous owner in a particularly good light.

Wondering if Nagell-Erichsen's Maybach is still in Norway?

Mercedes-Benz history at Brooklands

Mercedes-Benz history at Brooklands

brooklands
The tradition is literally in the walls at Mercedes-Benz World. This is one of the scenes.

If you are more than moderately interested in Mercedes-Benz, British racing cars from the interwar period or British passenger planes, I recommend a trip to the disused Brooklands railway in Surrey, south-east of London.

Mercedes-Benz World is packed with automotive history. The first petrol-powered car was a Benz, and the brand has been a trendsetter for the car industry for over 130 years. It is very nice to see. The greatest emphasis is placed on newer models. The entire model program can be studied, including Smart and models that are not imported to Norway. Unfortunately, the new X-Class was conspicuous by its absence. Probably, the production of right-hand drive cars has not started yet.

brooklands
Photos show how well the cars are presented in the exhibition halls.

At Mercedes-Benz World, you can open doors and take a closer look at the great S-Class and AMG offerings without salesmen breathing down your neck. Should you wonder about anything, you can find most of it on the fact sheet, or ask supervisors who are nearby. Mercedes-Benz World is open every day and is free for everyone - and well suited for children.

Smooth driving and track driving

The greatest experience for many is probably the opportunity to drive on a track. You can take almost any model out on smooth and dry tracks. These are great team-building activities, also among Norwegians. It sounds really good on the plain when four AMG models frolic on the track.

brooklands
Judging by the driving, these were professional, competent, drivers, - dressed in black driving suits and full-face helmets.

Speaking of slick driving, the country roads also offered slick driving after the whole of Great Britain had been hit by -5 degrees and a blizzard the day before. At Brooklands I had the experience of seeing four drivers as actually could drive smoothly. Everyone else who tried out on the track clearly had very little experience with Nordic driving conditions.

brooklands
Remains of Brooklandsbanen today. There is a sign saying that you have to be careful, because the track can be slippery... it's simply overgrown with moss!

Brooklands Museum

Brooklands Museum is right next to Mercedes-Benz World. The two experience sites are aimed at the same type of audience. The remains of the old racing track are still standing, but you will never get to experience the roars of the legendary racing cars of the 30s there. They stand indoors in the museum hall.

It is also worth mentioning the aircraft exhibition at the museum. It is fantastic. The Concorde was not open to the public that day, but I got a good look at the Sultan of Oman's former private jet, a Vickers VC10, – a converted airliner with twin Rolls-Royce engines mounted in the rear of the fuselage. This aircraft is now placed back in almost the same place it was built in 1964. Certainly 14 people must have been engaged in the construction and maintenance of aircraft here. Now, no one, apart from museum staff with roots, enthusiasm and pride in the former British aviation industry - and who happily share detailed knowledge with other aircraft geeks, such as myself - prefers cockpits built with analogue instruments.

How to get there:

By train:
South Western Railway from Waterloo station, London to Weybridge, Surrey. Travel time 30-40 minutes.
From Weybridge you can walk on the marked "foot path" (1 km). Go up to the roundabout by the main road. Keep to the right without crossing the road. Walk parallel to the railway, first along a parking space, then on the marked path. The path crosses the railway at one point. Continue along the railway until you cross the river, then turn left under the railway bridge and you will see the museum grounds. You can also take a taxi from the station. There is a taxi rank at the station.

By car/taxi from Heathrow:
Take the M25 south. Turn off at the A320 towards Woking and Chertsey. After leaving the M25, the road will be signposted all the way to Brooklands. Distance from Heathrow is approx. 20 km.
