Saab's latest classics

2011 Saab 9-3 1.8t. One of Saab's latest classics?

The last Saabs are disappearing from the road. Which cars – if any – should be picked up as Saab's last classics before they end up in the press?

“Is this car interesting to you?”

My wife occasionally takes pictures of old, rare, and exclusive cars. I post several of her pictures on my Instagram account. She has a keen eye for spotting nice cars. The pictures she showed me this time were of a white 2011 Saab 9-3. It wasn't terribly old, nor was it particularly rare or exclusive. But in her eyes, the car was special because it was a Saab.

What makes "her" car special is that it is one of the last Saabs to be produced – just a few months before production ceased for good. According to the vehicle register, the car has had the same owner since new. Many Saab owners were very loyal to the car brand. Both my father and father-in-law belonged to this group of car owners. Can loyal Saab owners keep the car brand alive? The cars are known to last a long time – in fact, more than 20 years.

Saabs are popular vintage cars all over the world. But the models that undoubtedly stand out as worthy of preservation today are the Saab 92, 93, 96, 99 and the first series of the 900 up to 1993. The next models in the ranks of the classics are the Saab 9000 and the new generation of the 900 series that was designed by Einar Hareide – especially the 3-door variant. A large proportion of these models have already been scrapped.

In the mid-1970s, Saab realized that they did not have the resources to develop a new car model on their own. They therefore entered into a strategic partnership with Fiat. The goal was to develop a large car model in a joint venture between 4 different car manufacturers – Fiat, Lancia, Saab and Alfa Romeo. Part of this partnership was to sell Saab Lancia 600 as the successor to the Saab 96.

It was none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro who was commissioned to develop the 4 new car models on a common platform. The result was Fiat Croma, Launch Thema, Saab 9000 og Alfa Romeo 164.

1992 Saab 9000 2.0i

Saab further developed the car with its own interior and safety features such as steel beams in the doors. Despite the Italian influence, the 9000 appeared as a true Saab. It was launched in 1984 as a combi-coupé with a 2-liter Saab turbo engine.

The Saab 9000 was produced from 1984 (as model year 1985) to 1998 in three different versions.

  • 9000 CC (Combi Coupe).
  • 9000 CD (Corps Diplomatique) sedan.
  • 9000 CS (Combi Sedan) a new combi-coupé design that visually resembled a sedan.

From the 1991 model year, the cars got a slanted front and from the 1993 model year, a completely new, lower front section.

1992 Saab 9000 2.0i

1992 Saab 9000 2.0i

The cars were powered by Saab engines – 4-cylinder 2.0 and 2.3 liter engines with and without turbo solutions. But for a while you could also order the Saab 9000 with a 3.0 liter V6 engine from GM. GM bought a 50% stake in Saab in 1989 and took over the entire company in 2000 – that is, after the 9000 model was developed.

This model was developed while GM owned 50% of Saab, where the two automakers operated in a kind of "joint venture". The Saab 900 "new generation" is based on the same platform as the Opel Vectra. The engines were Saab's own, but now they were transversely mounted and not longitudinally mounted as in the original Saab 900. There was also a 6-cylinder engine option from GM, but no diesel yet.

Saab 9-3 version 1 (1998-2002)

Saab 9-3 Aero.

Saab claimed to have made 1100 changes to the Saab 9-3 compared to the Hareide model, but visually it looked more like a facelift. The most noticeable change was that the rear registration number had been moved up between the taillights. Many improvements had been made under the skin. You could say that the 9-3 was an improved version of the 900 NG without losing Saab's brand identity.

Saab 9-5 (1998-2010)

In the same way, one could say that the 9-5 was an improved and more premium version of the 9000 CD (sedan). The combi-coupés were no longer part of the model range. The 9-5 was built on the same platform as the Vectra B, and thus more closely linked to GM than the outgoing 9000. Saab had raised the model to the same level as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. One could say that it became a bit more mainstream than the 9000 model.

Saab 9-3 version 2 (2002-2012)

The last 9-3 was based on the Vectra C platform and a completely new design where only the front carried the classic Saab identity. No combi-coupe was made. The engines were either based on Ecotec gasoline from GM or diesel engines from Fiats MultiJet series. The model received a facelift in 2008 with changes to the front and white taillights. It is too early to call these cars classics. Many might argue that they are too influenced by the Opel Vectra from the same time period. But if you put a 2011 Opel Vectra next to a Saab 9-3, I think most people would point out the Saab as a future classic.

In any case, the very latest Saab models, such as the 9-3 from the last model year and the 9-5 NG (new generation), will be on display in car museums in a few decades.

The search for what characterized Saab

Saab did not have exclusive rights to "combi-coupé" and "turbo", but both terms were introduced by Saab. The sound of a 2-stroke, V4 or the warm, raspy sound of the 2-liter engine originating from Triumph evokes associations with Saab.

Some might say that Saab lost its distinctiveness after GM took over. Many thought the same when Saab appeared in Lancia clothing. The fact is that Saab would not have survived on its own. Then the gates would have been closed much earlier.

Saab was a car brand that until recently appealed to car buyers who wanted something special and who perhaps had fond memories of Saab. Whether a car model is considered a classic is as much about irrational emotions, enthusiasm and brand loyalty.

It's not always the best cars that become classics.

Cadillac BLS – Nice try!

cadillac bls
Cadillac BLS made in Sweden.

A completely unexpected news. Even the dealers were surprised. A new Cadillac adapted for the European market?

I don't remember which newspaper published the story, but it was about a journalist who had contacted a local car dealer. The dealer was completely fired up by what he had seen.

“I'm at a dealer meeting now – will call you tomorrow. You won't believe what kind of car I've seen here!”

Excerpt from a German advertisement

An independent model

It was no secret that the new Cadillac BLS was based on the Saab 9-3. After all, GM has never been a stranger to so-called "badge engineering", where you create a "new" car model by replacing the grill and placing a different logo on the steering wheel. But BLS was no "rebadge job". In addition to a new front, it received a completely redesigned rear that resembled Cadillac's larger sedan models. In addition, the suspension was made softer and more noise reduction was added. I guess the steering maybe got a more powerful servo? Inside, changes were made to place the model in a higher premium tier. Among other things, you could get leather seats with Cadillac leather. Saab's green instrument lighting was replaced with white light and an elegant clock was given a central place on the dashboard.

Cadillac for Passat money

The Cadillac BLS appeared as a 2006 model. Norway was then a diesel country. "Everyone" was supposed to have a diesel car, which GM had realized. The new Cadillac could of course be delivered with a diesel engine. GM's 1,9 turbodiesel was used by both Opel and Saab, and was developed by Fiat under the name MultiJet. Due to the diesel-friendly tax policy, the Cadillac BLS 1,9 D Business Sedan became the most affordable version here at home. It cost exactly the same as a Volkswagen Passat 2,0 TDI Highline Sedan. Cadillac for Passat money, in other words – or NOK 20 more than what the equivalent Saab 000-9 Sedan cost.

What was he thinking?

Bob Lutz was vice president of GM and is considered the man behind the BLS project. GM did not have to dig deep into the wallet to develop and produce the new model. The differences between the Saab 9-3 and the Cadillac BLS were no greater than that both models could be produced along the same production line in Trollhättan. The BLS program resulted in better utilization of the production equipment and a completely new car model in the bargain. Good for Saab – and good for GM. One can speculate about what goals Bob Lutz actually had. Was it to test the production apparatus for the production of two models at the same time, or was it a test of the market for a European Cadillac? In both cases, you can say that it was a good attempt.

The flop

The Cadillac BLS didn't sell well anywhere. American motoring press were quick to label the car "weird" - and said it would never reach the US. The European car press was kinder in its reviews. The Saab 9-3 was not a bad car - something Cadillac could reap benefits from. It is difficult to find any exact reason why BLS never became a success. I can only share my own thoughts when I changed my car in 2006.

The qualification of the election

I like American cars - for example, one with a warm V6 and an automatic transmission. But in 2006 such an engine option would be disproportionately expensive. A Cadillac with diesel? What's the joy in owning an American model that no American will admit to? I didn't want to be a "Wanna-Be" Cadillac owner. For me it was (yet) a new Volkswagen Passat. For the same price as the Cadillac, I got a spry pump-nozzle diesel, sports seats and snobbish Highline grill. My now long previously owned Passat was recently wrecked with over 300 km at an unknown location in Finnmark. If you own a Passat B000 or newer, all you have to do is enjoy it as long as it lasts. You can then hand it over for scrapping with a clear conscience - like an old bookcase from Ikea.

2007 Cadillac BLS interior

But what about the Cadillac BLS?

I spotted the car at the top of the page just a few days ago. It must have been ages since I last saw a Cadillac BLS. There are only 80 cars in the vehicle register. Most (54) were registered in 2006 – i.e. the first model year. The last 3 cars were registered as recently as 2010. Approximately 12 of the 80 cars have been wrecked, 5 have been confirmed deregistered and 6 may be in winter storage. Now is probably the time for the owners to decide whether to keep the car or deliver it for scrapping.

Will probably continue as Saab

I have started taking "snapshots" of newer Saabs for fear that they will disappear for good. In 10 years, I think many people will find pleasure in studying a Saab 9-3 up close.

How will the BLS be perceived in 10 years? Like Saab or Cadillac?

What matches will the cars appear at? Saab meeting or Amcar meeting?

I don't think I need to give an answer, but om should a BLS show up at a Cadillac meet in 10 years, I hope it's a "top of the line" Cadillac BLS 2,8 T Sport Elegance Automatic - a car that cost a decent NOK 795 in 600.

A quick Swede – Saab 96 sport

An exciting car from a car manufacturer that was long at the forefront when it came to the development of family cars. This particularly applied to driving characteristics and design.

Saab started in 1937 as a manufacturer of aircraft for the Swedish armed forces. After the peace in 1945, the need for aircraft decreased so that new opportunities and markets had to be considered. A war with great destruction meant that the need for cars and transport was very great. Saab, along with many other manufacturers, saw a large market in the following years, and decided to start car production. In the early days, a small family car was produced with the name Saab 92. It was only the beginning of a number of well-known and smooth-driving car models from the Swedish car factory. Saab had a difficult start as a car manufacturer right after the war. Access to all types of materials was limited at the end of the 1940s. But it eventually became a car, even though production was relatively small at the start. The car had good driving characteristics which made Saab a good name among motor sports enthusiasts right from the start.

Saab 96 sports

The successor to the Saab 93 was the model with the designation 96. It was produced between 1960 and 1980. The new model was very similar to its predecessor but had a larger rear window and slightly better space for passengers and luggage. The changes to the bodywork gave the car a far more modern look. Here there was also a sporty version with the designation "Saab 96 sport". This was a model with more horses and better equipment. The front seats were thick and very comfortable, while the back seat became a small bench. The car was tailored for motor sports athletes and others who liked to drive sporty cars. This was a real winning car both on the track and on the road. The pictures here show the latest version with a new and extended front section. It was also the last model with a 2-stroke engine. When Saab replaced the old 2-stroke engine with a new V4 engine, the car lost much of its distinctive character and the sports version (also called "Monte Carlo") disappeared in 1968.

The last Saab

Saab 9-5
Saab 9-5 (illustration photo terjesbiler.no)

There was hectic activity in Detroit, Rüsselheim and Trollhättan in the last few years before Saab went bankrupt. Time was short. They had to sell more cars. They did that by putting Saab badges on other models. But they managed to make a brand new Saab as well.

Shared technology with others

The Saab 9-5 with the type designation YS3G was more American than ever. It shared a platform with the Cadillac XTS and Buick LaCrosse. The Opel Insignia had the same platform but a shorter wheelbase. GM wanted to strengthen Saab's popularity by profiling the brand in line with Cadillac. Both Cadillac and Saab could be supplied with GM's 2,8 turbo V6 engine and Turbo4 2,0 T. Saab's 2-liter engine was adapted to E85 biofuel. In Europe, customers could also choose the 1,6 T with 180 HP and turbodiesel – TiD4 2,0D with 160 HP or twin-turbodiesel TTiD4 2,0D with 190 HP – engines likely to originate from Isuzu. Saab's four-wheel system XWD (Cross Wheel Drive) was also possible as an option together with the largest engines. The XWD system installed in the new 9-5 was a Haldex-4 system with enhanced active electronic differential lock (eLSD)

Wasn't a big seller in Scandinavia

The new generation of Saab 9-5 did not go down particularly well in Norway - for several reasons. Some may have thought that the new 9-5 model was too expensive. The station wagon was not yet ready, and large sedans were hard to sell. Moreover, it was no secret that GM's Saab division was struggling with red numbers. No more than 244 cars were sold. It didn't go much better in Sweden either. 668 cars were sold there, of which 628 are still on the road. Nevertheless, Saab managed to roll out 11 cars during the 280 months that production lasted.

Saab 9-5 NG

Looks good

It is rare to come across a Saab 9-5 NG. But lately I've actually seen two different cars in daily use. Both TiD4 2,0D. It has been over 10 years since the first cars hit the road. When I study them with "new" eyes, I see that the design has held up very well. Over the years, we've grown accustomed to large sedans - albeit with Tesla logos - not Saab. But the shape of the 9-5 resembles a thought of the Tesla S. I think it looks best from the side and from the back. The front would probably have received a facelift if Saab had still existed.

Children's diseases

“Incredible ergonomics", says an American 9-5 owner after almost 10 years with the same car. He says that the XWD system has never produced a single wheel slip. On the minus side, he complains about "lag" in both engine and gearbox - GM's 2,8 V6 with automatic. He also mentions the childhood illnesses that "all" owners have had to fix on their own after the bankruptcy. The brake light and the strip of light between the rear lights which failed and which have long since been sold out at the dealers. Fortunately, you can buy newly manufactured parts on eBay. When the battery begins to run low, occasional error messages may appear on the screen that have scared the wits out of owners. The infotainment system is vulnerable. A small technical error can cause a lot of trouble. Or when the engine stops and cannot be started. Teknikens Värld experienced stalling with 2 different cars. Saab replied that they believed the fault lay in the car's software.

No guarantees

Software can become difficult to fix over the years when the manufacturer and dealers are gone. Fortunately, there are many who still know a lot about Saab. They like to share experiences on social media. Old Saab mechanics do not meet Saab owners with a cold shoulder. This means that Saab can live a long time - including the new 9-5 generation. Because there is little doubt that it can quickly gain status as a collector's car.

Let's go 20 years into the future. Then all Saabs will be vintage cars. Will all cars with the Saab logo gain collector value? Hardly! Some bastards were also made.

To put it bluntly, GM's takeover of Saab was a rape of Saab's soul. The Trollhättan was managed from Opel in Rüsselheim, which in turn received orders from GM in Detroit. After all, Saab has previously collaborated with other car manufacturers - without losing its soul, such as for example with Italian Lancia. That collaboration resulted in the Saab 9000. Early collaboration with Opel did not cause any major damage to the soul either. That the new 900 model shared a platform with the Vectra did not create sour faces. After all, the beautiful bodywork was designed by the Norwegian Einar Hareide - and the engines were mainly Swedish. But at one point or another, everything took a different turn. If Saab were to exist as a separate car brand, the production volume would have to be increased - quickly and a lot! The economists' speech was clear.

The remedy was re-badging

GM had been doing this for many years. You take a fully developed car and replace the grill and logos. This allows you to sell the same product on different markets or different customer groups. Here are some examples:

Saab 9-2X

"Saabaru"

Do you recognize this one? It's the Saab 9-2X. It sold GM 10 copies of. This is a car Trollhättan hardly had any influence on. Maybe you should call it the Saabaru Impreza?

Saab 9-5X

"Saabrolet"

Another example is this mediocre creature. The Chevrolet Trailblazer wasn't much to write home about. GM created re-badged models in the East and West – though the Saab 9-7X was perhaps the most successful of them all. There was no Saab. It was a Saabrolet of which GM managed to sell 20 units.

Saab 9-4X

"Saabillac"

The most visually successful re-badging was the one that happened in 2011. Then the Cadillac SRX mk2 was re-badged into the Saab 9-4X. But the Saabillac was launched just before Saab went bankrupt. Therefore, only a few hundred cars were sold. You can make your own 9-4X. Just get an Opel Antara and a Saab font.

When did Saab stop being Saab?

For many, Saab is about memories and feelings. There are many of us who practically grew up in the back seat of a Saab 96 enveloped in tobacco smoke from the front seats. We took the first groping drives with a companion in a Saab V4 - and went around the country and coast in my father-in-law's red Saab 99. For me, the Saab feeling disappeared when the Saab was equipped with MultiJet diesel engines from Fiat. I'm sure someone said the same thing when Saab switched from two-strokes to the Ford V4. But I think we can all agree on one thing:

Saabillac, Saabrolet and Saabaru must never have a prominent place in Saab's history!

Is the new 9-5 a proper Saab?

Although time was short, the 9-5 NG was not a re-badged Chevrolet or Cadillac. It was developed on one of GM's most widely used full-size platforms. It got engines that were adapted to Europe, including 2 diesel engines and an engine that could run on E85 biofuel to appeal to Swedish environmental enthusiasts. But none of the engines were Swedish. The XWD system, on the other hand, was undoubtedly Swedish. So were the car's designers. It links the car to Sweden. It is the which allows you to place it by a Swedish "majstång" in front of a "röd stuga" and claim that it is a Swedish car. When you study the miserable "re-badging" you can think with horror and horror...

- it could have been much worse!
