Shorter than its predecessor

The Corvette C4 – the fourth model – was in production from model year 1984 to 1996. The model was delivered with GM's 350 (5,7 liter) small-block V8 – albeit in several variants throughout the production period. Visually, the C4 appears larger than its predecessor, but that is an optical illusion. Namely, it is 13 cm shorter than the C3 – and has a 4,5 cm shorter wheelbase. However, the Corvette C4 is wider. The fact that the C4 seems larger than the C3 may be due to the simple, straight lines and the wedge-shaped shape. The C4 did not follow its predecessors' construction with fiberglass plates on a tubular steel frame. The C4 got a completely new chassis, and only the roof, which is made of fiberglass. The rest of the bodywork is molded from fiberglass-reinforced plastic.

ZR1 – collaboration with Lotus

When GM bought British Lotus, they gained access to well-qualified technicians. These were tasked with creating a special model of the C4, called the ZR1. The aim was to achieve ground-breaking results through weight reduction, trimming and improvement.
