DAF was started as early as 1928. In the 30s, they started producing trucks under license. In the 50s, they developed a passenger car with stepless, automatic power transmission - called Variomatic. DAF became a regular feature on the roads. In 1975, Volvo bought DAF's passenger car division. The DAF 66 was sold on as the Volvo 66. Today, Volvo produces passenger cars at the Nedcar plant. DAF is still alive as a truck brand.

The power transmission almost seemed like a differential lock. If one drive wheel spun, the system and the other wheel pulled the car forward.

The world's first CVT transmission. Steel belts are used today, but DAF used a belt material that resembles something we find in small industrial machines.
