DKW was founded by the Dane Jørgen Rasmussen in 1916 to build steam cars. It didn't go so well, but he created a 2-stroke engine in 1919. In 1932, DKW merged with the then Audi, Horsch and Wanderer into AutoUnion symbolized by four rings. After the war, DKW ended up behind the Iron Curtain but was relocated in West Germany where they eventually ended up in Ingolstadt.
