Ford P7

Two close – P7A and P7B

Shortly after Ford launched its P7 as a successor to the P5, they discovered that they were losing customers to Opel, which had just launched its new Rekord C. It is said to have caused hectic meeting business at Ford in Cologne. They decided to change their own newly launched model, - make it more like the Opel Rekord, - or more like its own predecessor, the sleek P5. There was a facelift just months into the P7's life cycle. Ford made a smoother body and smoothed out the kink over the rear wheels. The bumpers were again curled around the corners. The facelifted model received the designation P7B, while the short-lived predecessor is today referred to as P7A, or P7/1.

The most beautiful P7?

I have heard that Ford decided to make a new model after only 4 months. That makes the P7A a rarer car than its successor. I would also like to add "tougher", because in these times the car industry has found a way back to sharper lines.

many varieties

The P7 models could be delivered in many variants, more than we are used to today. 2- and 4-door sedan, coupé, hardtop coupé, 3- and 5-door station wagon (Turnier). In terms of engines, there were 1500, 1500 and 1700S – all V4 (60-85 HP), as well as 2000 and 2300 V6. I'm not sure about the equipment variants, but the first V4 engines could be supplied with both 3 and 4 speed gearboxes. Both steering gear and floor gear were available, as well as bench seats or separate front seats.

About the images of the P7A

All photos were either taken at Ford meetings at RøhneSelmer Billingstad or Lillestrøm - or at a Ford M meeting in Åsgårdsstrand 2019. The green 20M Turnier was taken at Hoftreffet 2021. The light blue 17 M Hardtop Coupé was photographed at the Oslo Motor Show, Exporama .

Ford P7B

Ford 20M XL (P7B).

The P7B was produced from 1968-1972 when it was replaced by the new Consul/Granada. At first glance, the P7B looks like a completely new model compared to the P7A, but it is only a facelift – a major facelift. The dimensions and contours of the models are the same. In other words, only changes have been made to the bodywork, dashboard and interior.

About the images of the P7B

Many of the photos were taken at Røhne Selmer Billingstad's annual Ford meet or at a Ford M meet in Åsgårdsstrand 2019. The red car with the yellow fog lights and the white 17M Coupe with vinyl roof were both photographed at the Norwegian Museum of Vehicle History at Hunderfossen. The rear of a red 17M 2000 RS was photographed at the Hoftreffet 2021. The interior photo of the car with green interior and automatic transmission was taken at an Oslo Motor Show at Exporama. The photo with two P7Bs was taken at a vintage car meet at RøhneSelmer Lillestrøm. The green one is a 26M 2-door hardtop with the 26M's characteristic headlights. The red one is a 17M 2000 RS with "VD" plates - also a 2-door hardtop.
