Humber Super Snipe

Humber Super Snipe Series III.

English executive car

The Humber car brand represented finer cars in the Rootes group. The model name Super Snipe has been around since the war, but the model shown here was built from model year 1959 through 1967. Like its predecessors, it was a large car for its time. Big and big. With a length of 4,70 m, it was roughly the same size as today's middle-class cars, but with a large wheelbase, there was plenty of legroom in the back seat - and the car was therefore well suited as a representative car. Inside, everything is as it should be in an English representative car, but it must be allowed to highlight the model's external similarity to Chevy's legendary 1955 model, - although there should not have been any formal collaboration.

Model history

5 series of this model were made. Externally, they can be distinguished as follows by model year: From 1959 – single headlights and grill, from 1960 – new grill, from 1961 – double headlights and grill with ribs that curve around the corners, from 1963 – rear window with slightly less curvature, from 1965 – completely redesigned glass body without curved panoramic windows and additional triangular windows in rear side windows (like Hillman Super Minx III). The car pictured is a Super Snipe III as follows Automobile-Catalog.com has a 3 liter inline six that produces 125 HP with a 3-speed gearbox and overdrive (Laycock de Normanville – additional option). With overdrive, the top speed was 160 km/h and 0-100 in 14,4 seconds.

About the pictures

It is the same car in all the pictures. The pictured Humber Super Snipe has history from Vestfold. The first owner was shipowner Lorentzen, and the car was bought new at Vestfold Auto, which was then a dealer for Rootes/Chrysler and SAAB. Later, the car was driven in the Tønsberg area. This is not just a car worth preserving, but a piece of Norwegian automotive history. The pictures were taken in different places, Ekeberg, Motangen in Blaker and Fornebu.
