Maserati Gran Turismo

Maserati Granturismo S

The Maserati GranTurismo was equipped with V8 engines developed by Ferrari and shared a platform with the Maserati Quattroporte.

Model history

The Maserati GranTurismo is based on the same platform as the Quattroporte 5The model was produced from 2007 (as a 2008 model year) until 2019. The following year the GranTurismo S arrived, and in 2011 the top-of-the-range MC Stradale arrived with slightly more horsepower and more track-ready features. From 2010 a convertible variant called the Maserati GranCabrio in Standard, Sport and MC versions.

The V8 engines in the GranTurismo were developed by Ferrari. The standard version got a 4.2 liter V8, while the others got a 4.7 liter V8 engine. In the MC Stradale, the engines produced 444 hp, and from 2013 454 hp.

Collaboration with Ferrari

The Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio are produced at Maserati's production facility in Modena. This is a relatively new facility that was put into use for the production of the Maserati 3200 GT – also a Gran Turismo. Ferrari provided technical assistance in building Maserati's production line, and it is said to have yielded very good results in terms of quality. Ferrari has also developed the two engines used in the GranTurismo and GranCabrio. They belong to an engine series (F136) that was also used in, among others, the Ferrari F430 and 458.

The GT concept in a nutshell

Calling a model a Gran Turismo creates expectations. It is neither a pure sports car – nor an all-round car for daily transportation. To put it bluntly, Maserati has created something between a Ferrari and a Quattroporte. I quote the following description from Ferrari's website:

GT stands for Grand Tourer or Gran Tourer, a type of car designed with both long-distance driving and high speeds in mind. These vehicles typically combine luxury and performance attributes, often featuring a 2+2 seating configuration.
