The McLaren Artura has a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric motor for extra power and faster response.
Several supercar manufacturers offer hybrid cars, including Ferrari SF90 og 296and Lamborghini Scrambled. The Artura has 2 engines, a 3 liter twin turbo petrol V6 engine with a 120 degree angle and an electric axial flux motor. Together they provide an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and 8.3 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h. It is also worth mentioning that the sound image is as it should be in a sports car.
Electric in line and reverse
The electric motor is an axial flux motor that weighs less and takes up less space than a conventional radial flux motor. The motor is located in the gearbox housing. The gearbox is of the dual clutch type with SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox). The gearbox actually has 3 clutches – the last one to engage for pure electric operation. The stated range is 32 km with a top speed of 29 km/h (!). Driving on pure electric power is therefore an alternative for driving in traffic jams, in parking garages and inner city centers. A special feature of the gearbox is that it has no reverse gear. When reverse is selected, the electric motor is used with reverse rotation. This may explain the speed limitation. It is good to know that the car cannot drive in reverse at more than 300 km/h. It is also good to know that McLaren ensures that there is always power in the batteries so that you can always reverse.

About the pictures
The main image of the orange car was taken while it was standing outside the Norwegian Sports Car Club's annual spring mustering at Øvrevoll racecourse in 2025. The green (Mantis Green) car was photographed on the road in Hertford, UK. The interior and rear views with the doors open were taken in a garage/salesroom belonging to a dealer.
