Many years behind him
The G-Class is currently the Mercedes-Benz model that has been in production the longest. According to Daimler AG, the brand new model will be completely reworked, but kept in the well-known style we all know. We Norwegians may remember the car from initial services, rehearsal exercises and HV exercises. Those of us who have lived a long time remember how the car was produced as stock tractors in the 80s. Preferably parked with two wheels on the pavement in Frogner somewhere. Back then, SUVs weren't as common. Nevertheless, we had vehicles such as the Chevy Blazer and Suburban, Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero, as well as the slightly smaller Jeep Cherokee. I felt that the G-Klasse – or Geländerwagen as it was then called – was a crossover between Landrover and Suburban.

Will it be a short trip?
I haven't driven the brand new G-Class, but I know you can rent the AMG G 63 on closed track/off-road for an hour for £200. The venue is MercedesWorld at Brooklands, Weybridge in Surrey outside London. It's on my todo list. You must order in advance online. The G 63 has AMG's 4-litre V8 biturbo petrol engine. It produces 585 HP and ensures that 0-100 takes place in 4,5 seconds and a top speed of 219 km/h. The latter is probably of more theoretical interest.

About the pictures
The main image is the all-new AMG G 63, photographed at Knightbridge, London. The white one is photographed in March 2018 inside MercedesWorld's showroom at Brooklands. There is also an AMG G 63. The tall car is a G 500 4×2². It has a special wheel suspension that allows the axles to lie above the car so that it can get through the desert. heather and snow without subbing down. The car is photographed at a car dealer in Høvik outside Oslo.
