The Nash Ambassador is one of the longest-running car models. From 1927 to 1957, it was produced in several series as a luxury full-size car.
Airflyte
Nash introduced many technical innovations. One of these was the "Bed-In-A-Car" where the entire interior of the car could be converted into a "sleeping compartment". Nash is probably best known for the new streamlined models that came out in 1949 with the name "Airflyte" where the wheel arches were covered to provide better aerodynamics and a stiffer body. Nash Ambassador represented this style up to and including 1956.
Competition between car manufacturers in the United States became fierce in the 1950s. Nash therefore merged with Hudson in 1954. The new company was named AMC (American Motors Corporation). 1957 was the last year that the Nash name was used and the factory chose to group all the brands under the "Rambler" name.
Twin Torpedoes
Twin Torpedoes as hood ornaments, Scenoramic panoramic windows and Jetfire engine were typical terms for the 1950s. Yet Nash appears to be more soberly designed than the three big car manufacturers.
Engines
Both the 1955 and 1956 models were available with the 4.1 liter Jetfire straight-six with 135 hp. There was also a LeMans Dual Jetfire engine with two carburetors. The V8 option was for 1955 a 320 V8 – and for 1956 a 352 V8. Both of these engines originated from Packard. In 1956 some variants could be delivered with an AMC 250 V8.
The Nash Ambassador was made in the following variants: Super was a 4-door sedan with a 6-cylinder engine, Custom was either a 4-door sedan or a 2-door Hardtop – both with a V8 engine. Transmission via 3-speed manual transmission or Twin Ultramatic Drive machine.
