Same car – several models
The Renault 9 is a sedan with 2 or 4 doors – and eventually a convertible. The Renault 11 is a hatchback with 3 or 5 doors. In the United States, the Renault 9 was produced and sold as the Renault Alliance. It was sold through a partnership between the AMC chain and Renault. Renault entered the 80s with the Renault "Le Car" - which was the American name for the Renault 5. "Le Car" was a car you either loved or hated.
Engines
The Renault 9 and 11 were sold in several trim levels and engine options. The most popular were the 1.4 and 1.7-liter petrol engines. In addition, it was available with a 1.6-liter diesel engine. The turbo version was based on the 1.4 engine and produced 115 HP.
About the pictures
The main picture, the silver-gray sedan version, is a US model. The photo was taken in 1986 – and the car – a rental car – is from the same year. I had ordered a Chevette, but the lady at the counter smiled slyly and said she had an exotic car for me. A really good choice! 1.7-liter engine, air conditioning and automatic. The blue cars are Renault 11 Turbos, photographed at a car show in France. The car with the number on the side participated in a local car race in the French Pyrenees. The white sedan – Renault 9 – and the black convertible were photographed at a car show in Perpignan. The convertible is a Renault Alliance – the American version of the Renault 9. The blue 5-door GTD was also photographed in Perpignan.

All new cars at the time (except the Yugo) could keep up with the Chevette here, but the Renault Alliance - aka Renault 9 and 11 - with independent suspension on all four wheels, was a positive experience both over the hills of San Francisco and the highways around the city .
