Cleans the model program

The decision to sacrifice the two PSA models is a consequence of the merger between PSA and Fiat-Chrysler. Stellantis wants to secure the Fiat Panda and Fiat 500's positions in the market. These models are more important for Fiat than what the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 are to PSA. This leaves PSA without any model in the A segment. Citroen fills the gap with the following two models: The new all-electric AMI, which is a moped car with a battery capacity of 5,5 kWh, a range of 75 km and a top speed of 45 km/h. In addition, Citroen has launched a toned-down version of the C3, called the C3 You, with a PureTech 82 HP engine and manual transmission. It has simpler decor, simpler seat covers and a scaled-down infotainment system, but the same level of safety as the other C3 variants.

Toyota's factory

The collaboration between PSA and Toyota has included the models Citroen C1, Peugeot 107/108 and Toyota Aygo. They are manufactured in the same factory with identical technical components. If you look closely at the seams of the cars, it says "Toyota" on several of the parts. There is a lot of Toyota in them, and a year ago Toyota took over ownership of the factory in Kolin, Czech Republic. There they will produce the new Aygo X and Yaris.

Aygo X as a crossover

The new Aygo X - "X" stands for cross - is built on the same platform as the Yaris. With a total length of 370 cm, width of 174 cm and 18-inch wheels, it is large for its class. The engine is basically the same as in the Aygo, but now adapted to new European environmental requirements. The new Aygo X is no boring Toyota. It has sharp, modern lines and app solutions aimed at young, café latte-drinking, urban people. It is offered in 4 different spice colors – Cardamom, Chili, Ginger and Juniper. The signature model is made in a limited edition - made in "Cardamom" with decorative elements in "Matte Mandarina".

Toyota largest of the three

In the last 3-4 years, new car sales of Citroen C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo have been very modest in Norway. In the rest of Europe, on the other hand, Aygo has had good sales figures with almost 100 cars sold in 000. Of the three models, Aygo has accounted for 2019% of sales, while Citroen C50 and Peugeot 1 have each accounted for 108%. The same relationship was present in Norway.

Used cars

At the moment there are 178 used cars of the mini trio from the Czech Republic for sale on Finn.no. As a used car, you can get a simple, reliable car with low mileage for around NOK 30. The Toyota Aygo is generally more expensive than the other two models for no real reason. All three models are produced on the same assembly line. According to TÜV reports from 000 to 2015, the three models come out better than average. Almost all the cars for sale have the same 2019-litre engine with 1,0 cylinders and timing chain. Newer cars could be delivered with 3 VTi engines - also those with 1,0 cylinders and a timing chain. They provide 3 HP instead of 72 HP. In Europe, cars were sold with a 69 diesel engine producing 1,4 HP. These have a timing belt - not a chain. Some cars have an automatic transmission, which is an unsophisticated, robotic, manual 54-speed transmission solution. It shifts hard and erratically and is not suitable for driving on icy and snowy roads. Is not recommended.

Known error

Faults that reoccur more often than other cars are a worn clutch and water penetrating the passenger compartment. Some owners experience water coming in from the roof, others from the boot. There has also been a warranty repair due to poorly glued rear windows.

The models were produced from 2005 to 2022. In that time, 3 upgrades were made. The first for model year 2009, then 2012 and a major change for 2014. Peugeot went by the model name 107 until 2014, when it changed its name to 108. The changes consisted of visual changes, interior controls and seat upholstery. The changes in 2014 included improvements to the rear suspension and the option of a hill start holder.

On the road

Although the 1-litre engine does not perform all the world's best on paper, it is experienced as responsive and nimble with good traction at low revs so that you rarely need to push the engine. The gearbox is suitable for quick shifting, the steering is light, and with a hill start holder - both easy to drive and fun to drive. It is well suited for training new drivers. In terms of space, it is a 2+2, not a 4-seater. The driver's seat with fixed headrest is surprisingly comfortable even for tall people. The sound level is higher than in the classes above, without being particularly annoying.

Should I buy a mini car?

whitemini

I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised at how much space it is actually possible to get out of a car of about 3,5 metres! You will find all modern safety equipment such as ABS, ESP and airbags where they should be. You get a brand new car for the same price as a 3-year-old Golf!

The smallest car class offers a number of obvious advantages such as: – low price, – low loss of value, – low fuel consumption, – low maintenance costs, – easy to park, – can choose parking spaces where larger cars have to search further, – provides more space in the garage, – easy to drive, – practical. Nevertheless, there are a number of critical factors linked to small cars. You should study these factors carefully before you possibly decide on a class A car.

Place

For many, the space becomes the most eye-catching point for whether you can use a car in this class. Do you need to bring a lot of luggage? In that case, you have to count on folding down one of the back seats. Then there will not be room for more than 3 people.

Weight

Four adults weigh 300-400 kilos together. In this car class, the car's total weight is then approached. In addition to affecting the driving characteristics, you risk high wear and tear on the suspension and chassis parts if you drive a lot with a full car.

Wheelbase and track width

On the road, most people will prefer a car with a long wheelbase and wide track to get the best possible stability. Cars with a short wheelbase are more sensitive to external influences such as gusts, longitudinal tracks and unevenness in the road surface. This may require you to exercise extra caution in such conditions. In this class, a difference in wheelbase of a couple of centimeters means a lot. The wheels must be placed as far out as possible.

Performance and engine choice

Don't be blinded by the number of horsepower. It is the number of horsepower per tonnes that apply. You can find this number under Dimensions/Weight in the car congurator here.

One of the advantages of cars in this class is that they actually work well with a small engine due to their low weight. If you choose to go up a step in engine, the Norwegian tax system ensures that the final sum can be almost as high as a car in the class above. Then you might as well choose a bigger car.

Safety

It is a recognized claim that small cars have poor safety. In traffic, it is true that heavy, large cars bring a natural sense of safety. But there are more factors than weight and the number of meters of steel that apply in the event of a collision. New cars have more safety equipment than a few years ago. If you hit a stationary object, the European NCAP measurements show that small cars can be as safe as larger cars.

Respect in traffic

Certain road users behave more aggressively towards small cars than larger cars. This is easy to notice if you have the opportunity to drive several different cars. When you drive a small car, you will more often experience that drivers overtaking drive with too little distance. You will more often find that other drivers do not comply with the right of way for a small car, and you may actually be harassed at times.

The interior

The first sign of a solid interior is the steering wheel. Does the steering wheel feel good to hold? Do all the controls seem solid? There is no reason to create a fussy interior even if the car is small! The seat backs of small cars are often made thin to give a couple of extra centimeters to rear seat passengers. However, you should never feel that the seat backs are yielding.

Equipment

It is important that all safety equipment is in place. This includes ABS, ESP (anti-skid), at least 6 airbags and Isofix attachments for child seats. On some of the cheapest models, you may find necessary safety equipment on the list of extras. An advantage of minicars is the low price. Then you shouldn't be too generous with choosing additional equipment. That equipment you mustn't have in a minicar is partially fold-down rear seat. Due to limited luggage capacity, you will often need to fold down the back seat, and then it is important that you avoid having to fold down the entire back seat.

A little tip!

When you test drive the car, you should be careful to park next to a well-known car model such as the Volkswagen Golf. Get out of the car and study the size ratio between "your" car and the scale. This is often not easy to see in car dealerships where the cars are placed to look as large as possible.

2013 Citroën C1 and Euro cars with nose factor

The Americans call it "badging". You take the same model and stick a new brand on the front. Voila! Then a completely new model can be launched.

In 2005, the PSA group and Toyota started joint production of a newly developed minicar in Kolin in the Czech Republic. The same car has since been on sale as the Peugeot 107, Citroen and Toyota Aygo. The advantage of this collaboration is being able to reduce development and production costs. The only thing that distinguishes these cars is the integrated plastic bumper with grill, the rims and the paint colors.

It is therefore the "snout factor" that sets these cars apart. In 2012, all three models received an upgrade to the front. You can say that everyone has actually become a notch tougher in the face.

PSA and Toyota are no small players in the passenger car market. This "joint venture" venture has created an absolutely competent product that has been a hit, especially in southern parts of Europe. The design is very European – unfussy and dominated by function.

Customers can only choose a 1.0 liter engine that fulfills its function in a decent way. This concept fits well with Norwegian taxes. If you had wanted a larger engine, you would have ended up in the next car class in terms of price due to the tax system.

It is possible to order with automatic transmission. However, this is a very simple robotic gearshift solution that can cause problems in extreme wintry driving conditions. The advantage of the automatic transmission is that it does not steal power from the engine and thus does not send the one-off tax skyrocketing.

The cars have recently been downgraded to three stars by NCAP because ESP is not standard everywhere in Europe and because the side curtain airbags are not included in the base versions. In Norway, all cars are delivered with ESP. If you make sure to order the car with all six airbags, you get a four-star car in terms of safety.

A new car in Norway today should have ESP, 6 airbags and a radio as standard equipment. We have pre-selected this equipment in the configurations of the most affordable models in this series.

My choice

Here you choose the dealer and not the car. Go to the nicest dealer. Or should we say: Go for the muzzle factor?
