Nova Spektrum in Lillestrøm consists of exhibition halls which are suitable for car exhibitions, among other things. We have been to the Oslo Motor Show and eCarExpo.

This year's news

Chevrolet Corvette C8

It is not completely new - but new to many - myself included. The Chevrolet Corvette C8 is not something you see every day - at least not up close. Corvette Club Norway posed with a privately owned Corvette Stingray. The C8 has a mid-mounted, long-mounted engine – 6,2 litres, 502 HP and a top speed of 321 km/h. The engine is visible through the rear window. The front and the air intakes on the sides give associations to both Ferrari and the Ford GT mk2, which was also exhibited at the fair.

This must be called a car for eccentric riches. It costs NOK 18 million before Norwegian taxes. It has a 6,5 liter V12, 810 HP 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and rear wheel drive. 0-200 goes away in 7,9 seconds. My first thought is how it feels at 200 km/h without a windscreen, but that shouldn't be a problem. The aerodynamics must ensure that the face is not pressed flat at speed.

Privately owned cars

A separate hall was set aside for privately owned, nostalgic cars. The car clubs naturally lined up with member cars at the Oslo Motor Show 2021. Here it is easy to end up with the cars we remember from our own childhood - both cars in our dreams and in our daily lives. I would argue that the Ford Capri 3000 was something people dreamed of. Similarly, BMW's very futuristic "sharknose" from the 60s. Lotus Esprit you might have had a poster of in the boys' room. But the BMW 2002 and the Granada were somewhat borderline. For most of us, they were also dream cars. I got a closer look at a 1973 Granada 2300 Coupé in original spec. The most beautiful Granada interior I have seen in recent times! On the back of the wall was a 1977 Granada 3000 Coupé – the new model without the 'Coke bottle' bend on the rear side window.

Commercial vehicle

As in previous years, there is a lot of nostalgia to be found in the heavy transport hall. The cabins of the tractor units from the 70s and 80s look small and shabby, compared to today's rigs. Lucky were those who got a job on such a rig! On the news front, I focused on two cars. Ford F-Max and the new E-Transit. Both are produced at the Ford factory in Otosan, Turkey.

Ford E Transit

Today, all Transits are produced in the same place and shipped all over the world, even to the USA. Ford E-Transit is based on technology from Mach-e, and has a range WLTP of 317 km. I believe this will be a welcome addition to the growing goods distribution industry.

Ford F-Max

Do you remember the Ford Transcontinental? Many do not. The cars were produced between 1975-1984 in a collaboration between Ford in NL and the UK. Equipped with powerful Cummins engines, they were tough trucks. But Ford's truck production eventually became part of the Iveco collaboration - and Transcontinental was never followed up. Maybe not until now. Ford Otosan is now seeking cooperation agreements in the Nordic region. It is therefore not Ford Norway that must follow up any customers. I have a hard time seeing how they will get a foothold here, despite the fact that the cars are state-of-the-art with fuel-efficient drivetrains. EcoTorq engine of 12,7 litres, 500 HP and 2500 Nm. The car on display has an automatic 12-speed automatic gearbox from ZF.

Kirsten Flagstad's 1937 Lincoln has received a lot of press coverage in recent days. It was unveiled just before I arrived and many people wanted to take pictures. According to vegvesen.no, the car is a Lincoln Model K 359-B V12 Semi-Collapsible Cabriolet. It is 1 of a total of 7 cars built and belonged to the highest luxury class of the time. The car is said to have been given as a gift from the Metropolitan Opera in New York as a thank you for Kirsten Flagstad's efforts. Her performances saved the opera through difficult crisis years. The car has been bought back to Norway by the Norwegian Vehicle History Museum in Lillehammer. It was presented at the museum's stand, together with furnishings that would create a real period color from the 30s.

A wonderful Fastback

I choose to use the image of the yellow Charger as the main image. Firstly, it is impressive to see a car over 50 years old that is absolutely spotless. The podium is illuminated from below and does not hide anything. Inside, the fastback shape does not offer much space. The large car is only a 4-seater, and the two separate rear seat backs can be folded down as folding seats. There is an open luggage compartment at the back.

Street cars that can also work for daily driving

The V90 looks fantastic. It works great for all day-to-day transportation purposes. Imagine that you combine your motoring hobby with your everyday car. With a slightly generous budget, you can end up with a family car like this.

I would never have guessed that this gorgeous street car is actually a Hyundai Veloster. Not only was it an eye-catcher at the fair, but it may also be used as a daily means of transport. Vehicles like this light up dreary and autumnal weekdays.

Is the world's most beautiful car a Ford?

Perhaps one of the world's most beautiful cars? Italian design – Sergio Sartorelli. Produced by OSI (Officine Stampaggi Industriali, Turin). However, all mechanics are supplied by Ford in Cologne, based on what they had on the shelves there. This means that even though the car looks like it could handle both 8 and 12 cylinders, there are normal Ford engines in it. 2,0 – 2,3 – V6s found in the Taunus 20Ms of the time. These are very rare cars. Of the 2200 produced, there are barely 200 left.

Speaking of the world's most beautiful cars, I think OSI has to share the title with this one. I'm tempted to call it a retro design. The Ford GT (2005-2006) is undoubtedly reminiscent of the classic Ford GT40.

I will not hide the fact that it is classic cars and car history that caught my interest at the exhibition. It's not every day you see a Ford Cortina mk2 Crayford. Crayford was known for converting the Ford Cortina and BMW 02 series and 3 series into convertibles, among others. The green Cortina cabrio is an original Crayford, restored in Norway about 10 years ago.

Brave men in frail craft

The Norwegian Road Museum was represented by, among other things, a burgundy Troll and a Moskvitch 407. The Troll car was built with a comically raised roof, presumably because the owner was unusually tall. On the last trip, the gearbox - or the differential - had stuck. Since then, the car was donated to a museum. The history of trolls is fascinating. I bought "Drømmen om Troll" at the fair by the author Paal Kvamme. I will review the book here when I get around to reading it. Did you know that the Troll project faced political opposition from Gerhardsen himself? Own car production could put a stick in the wheels of trade agreements between Norway and the Soviet Union. In the government quarter, it certainly wasn't Troll which was to become Norway's favorite car. It was moskvitch!

It was advantageous to buy a Moskvitch around 1960. I was fascinated by the 1961 model which was on loan from the Norwegian Road Museum. Previously owned by a married couple in Oppland who did not have a driver's license themselves. They got a kind neighbor to drive them every time they needed to use the car up and down from the cabin in the mountains. With only a few thousand km on the clock, the Moskvitch was eventually put into the barn covered with a thick layer of felt. The problem with cars, like the Moskvitch, was that nobody cared to take care of them. I remember well the Moskvitch 407. My father had a 1959 model. One day the steering column smoked. Not the wood - but the rod itself! Then he got hold of a collision-damaged 1961 model from which he took parts, before selling it on. I remember that as a little boy I "drove" in the courtyard. The wrecker without a steering column had then become pleasantly light on the steering wheel.

vw id.3 — Soon it will be seen everywhere, but I hardly think turquoise will be the majority's favourite. ID.3 1ST.

Classic, anyway

If the future becomes rechargeable, the cars will be designed as electric cars from the ground up. Optimum use of space and aerodynamics can then be achieved. Today, only Tesla has implemented this. I think car manufacturers do not dare to deviate from today's design style for fear of losing buyers. It's just like in the car's childhood. Then the cars were built as horse-drawn carriages. Volkswagen's new ID.3 appears to be the first model after Tesla to take this step. Will ID.3 be a success? - As Golf was in its day? - Or will the ID.3 be a new K70? The K70 was planned as well Wankel engine, but got a petrol engine instead. Regardless, the ID.3 will be a future classic.

Mercedes-Benz W111 Coupe

I end the tour with another car on an underlit podium. W111 is the internal designation for the Mercedes-Benz model that is also referred to as "Grosse Heckflosse" - Mercedes-Benz with six-cylinder engines and fins. It first appeared as a '59 model and was partially replaced by the W108 in 1965, when the pointed fin design was no longer fashionable. The coupe version was produced from 1961 until 1971. In the second half of the 60s, it was available with the V8 engines of 3,5 and 4,5 litres. It certainly belongs in the "World's most beautiful cars" department.

Already from the train station at Lillestrøm I noticed several guys like me. A little older, with all-weather jackets, rucksack, hiking boots. Bird watchers?

Eldorado for car spotters

No, these were hobby photographers who were early on their way to Norway's Commodity Fair to secure photos before the large hordes of the public flocked. I met them at the fair with lenses and equipment, and an eye for angles and light. I myself fiddled around with my little one-handed camera and shot a bit in agony. I tend to forget to take pictures when I find something really interesting, - or get into a conversation with someone.

Large selection

It is easy to lose track. For enthusiasts, it doesn't matter, as long as it's about motor stuff. Supercars, motorsport, classics, hotrods, vintage cars, heavy cars, motorcycles, workshop, garage, equipment and magazines. Although, the bottom plug must have long since gone out of the car magazine market. I have canceled all my subscriptions after I found out that the magazines were left unopened in their plastic.

Pictures from the Oslo Motor Show

When was the last time you saw a Ford Escort mk1 1100 or 1300? Many have long since been transformed into Escort Mexico or RS2000. At least one thing is certain: if you find Aunt Dagmar's old mk1 Escort in a dry garage, you have found a treasure.

It is rare to come across a Cortina GT mk2 in original condition. Even rarer to see one in this color. Most were red or white. This is a car with Norwegian history. It first went as a demo car for Ford's head office in Kolbotn. The current owner bought it from an estate. It had been in a dry, airy garage and the mileage is now 15 km! Inside it looks brand new. No cracks in the top of the dashboard. The small panel with the extra bells is intact.

Original car

This car is as original as a 50 year old car can get. Original 13-inch wheels with caps and decorations. The model is 1968, which is before the small facelift came in 1969. Then the Cortinas got, among other things, Ford's new steering wheel with shock cushion, new internal door handles and a slightly reworked grill – blue color around the C mark in the middle and matte black areas in the ribs. The only thing missing are the period mirrors on the front fenders.

I couldn't convey it exactly here. But it is a special feeling to sit behind the wheel of an XK150. Surprisingly comfortable seat, the big steering wheel and the huge hood (in every way it feels).

The Truck section was very popular. It was a mixture of nostalgia, new vehicles, including Renault, and magnificent show cars. I fixated on the nostalgic cars, the latest Scanias and early Volvo F series. Scania muzzleloader with V8 is one of the toughest things made in Europe. The Volvo F12 Globetrotter was in its time the flagship of Volvo Last, - a wet dream for all young heavy transport drivers almost 40 years ago.

This is a rare sight in Norway. A Toyota built for kings and presidents. I don't think any left-hand drive versions were ever made, because the Century is primarily intended for Japanese royalty and state and business elites. It is strange that Toyota has produced - and produces - a car that is so close to the Lexus. At least it's the first time I've been able to study a Toyota Century up close.

In retrospect, the Taunus 17 M P3 appears as a well-designed car to have been introduced for the 1960 model year, when all self-respecting car factories made cars with fins. On P3, everything is rounded and oval - and must have been very ahead of its time. In Germany, the Taunus P3 goes by the name "Taunus Badewanne" (Bathtub Taunus). The car pictured is a van - panel van - based on the 3-door Turnier.
