Car meeting

We are often at car meets, - in Norway, France and England where we stay quite a lot. Many of the photos were taken at car meets.

Sunday photo: Car meeting at the shopping centre

carre d'or

We have been here many times before – Carre d'Or shopping center outside Perpignan in France. On the first Sunday of each month, the parking area is used for a car meeting - in the same spirit as Cars and Coffee. Here you can brush up on your car knowledge with cars you may only see once in your life.

Maserati Gran Turismo.

Maserati or Dodge?

My wife is on the trip and she really likes Maserati because of the tasteful interiors with the Maserati monogram embossed into the leather headrests. Sometimes we talk about what we would buy if we won the Lotto - for example 130 million or something like that. As we stroll among the cars on display on the Carre d'Or, she asks me which car I would buy if we won the lottery. I'm not sure, though Maserati Gran Turismo is a good candidate. I'm not going to drive fast, and I'm not going to impress anyone. I just want a pleasant atmosphere out on the road. A little further away stands one Dodge Challenger SRT with the Hemi V8. But the interior of the Challenger is far less exclusive than the Italian. Then it also costs "only" a third of what you have to pay for a new Maserati Gran Turismo - but maybe that doesn't mean much when you've won the lottery?

The finest Porsche of the event was this Porsche 911 "backdated".

Backdated

I only needed to take a quick glance across the space where the Porsches were lined up to discover the finest of them all. It is a 1987 model "backdated" - a restomod with modern technology and the classic, original Porsche look.

Panhard Dyna X

The first model after the war had an aluminum body and a 2-cylinder air-cooled engine - which would eventually become a common concept for subsequent models.

On two wheels in the turn

We had the pleasure of driving behind a Citroen Ami Break on the way to the meeting. It was wonderful to see how it rocked and dove on the road, especially on the roundabouts. My wife thought the car was going to overturn with the two guys on board. A few decades ago, the car journalists speculated whether the Citroens could topple over. They don't. The car sways and tips, but the wheels are planted to the ground the whole time.

Alpine V6 Turbo

The model was developed after Renault took over Alpine. The cars are built in fiberglass on a tubular steel frame with a V6 engine in aluminium, based on the so-called PRV engine. The Alpine GTA could be delivered with two engine choices, – V6 GTA with 160 HP and V6 turbo with 200 HP.

People flock to old, rare and exceptional cars in Perpignan. Last Sunday, the 300th meeting took place. These cars are history and culture – and cars should be driven, not stand still.

Regular readers know the posts with photos from French car meets in Perpignan, France. We have a small house in France, and when we are there, I take the opportunity to pop in when the meetings are arranged - always the first Sunday of each month. The meetings are open to classics, youngtimers, rare and exceptional cars and are held at the Carré d'Or shopping center in the east of the city. There is no doubt that the meetings are very popular. Sunday's meeting was number 300 in a row.

I am not the only visitor who does not exhibit any car. There are many visitors - entire families looking at the beautiful cars. Fathers show cars that their grandparents drove around in. All work in RVA66 is done on a voluntary basis, and it's free for everyone to come and see. RVA66 stands for Rassemblement de Véhicules du 66 - collection of vehicles from 66 - department 66 is Pyrenees-Orientales.

Terje's cars has a separate page called Cars from A to Z. Here I enter pictures and descriptions of car models I have driven myself, or taken pictures of along the road or at meetings like this. Eventually, I can show different cars of the same model – different variants, year models and facelifts.

Here are the pictures from last Sunday. My wife and I took a Sunday trip here, walked for about an hour, went back and had Sunday lunch in a town square. The temperatures down here by the Mediterranean are currently lower than in Norway. A small consolation is that a glass of red wine costs NOK 32 and that the first cherries have gone on sale at stalls around the city.

German cars

BMW 700 Convertible

Had it not been for the small cars Isetta and BMW 700, BMW would not exist today. They were on the verge of bankruptcy during the 1950s when they bet heavily on large luxury models that people could not afford. The BMW 700 succeeded the Isetta-based BMW 600. It was a more grown-up car, but still with engines from BMW's motorcycle range – a 700cc 2-cylinder boxer engine. Besides the cabriolet, like the car in the picture, the BMW 700 could be delivered as a Coupé with a fixed roof and as a 2-door sedan.

BMW 2000 CS (1965-69)

Early coupe versions of BMW Neue Classe had a front reminiscent of a shark's jaw - hence the nickname "Sharknose". The nice coupé shape was carried forward in the BMW E9, but unfortunately without the tough front section. BMW E9

Mercedes Benz 190 "Ponton"

I was unsure whether the Mercedes-Benz 190 "Ponton" was offered in the same red color as the car in the picture, but after searching the color chart, I see that the color is probably called "Feuerrot". No doubt it must have been a bold color choice in the 1950s, but since Mercedes-Benz supplied cars that went into public service, this might have been a nice color for fire marshals and doctors making house calls. Mercedes-Benz W120

Perpignan has a local importer of cars from Brazil and lately several nice cars have appeared from there. I also think the red Volkswagen originates from Brazil, because of the windshield. At one point, European Volkswagens got larger windshields, something Brazilian cars probably didn't get.

English cars

There is great interest in English cars in this French area. The finest car at the meet, in our opinion, was this early Jaguar X120 Roadster that appeared in the late 1940s (top photo series). A more modern X150 also took part in the meeting. Jaguar XK150

MG MGB V8

"Stylish color", my wife exclaimed when she spotted the lemon yellow MGB Coupé. Early V8 cars were fitted with Rover's 3,5 litre. Also notice the beautiful MG A in the picture below. MG MGB

Italian cars

I brought pictures of two Italian cars from the car meet at RVA66. The most special is probably the red Vespa 400. It has a 2-cylinder air-cooled stern-mounted scooter engine which, according to the specifications, should produce 14 horses and reach a top speed of 80-90 km/h. It can be registered as a heavy 4-wheel motorcycle (L7e) I think that if a new Ferrari and an old Vespa 400 are lined up next to each other in a place where most people travel, the Vespa will get the most attention. Autobianchi

French cars

Renault 12 (facelift)

One of the most boring cars at the meet (according to my wife) was this Renault 12. I took the photo to complement an earlier post about this model – Renault 12. The Renault 12 is more conventional than other Renaults of the same time. The aim was to offer a lot of car for little money – a successful concept that Renault succeeded well with.

Renault 5 – the original

The Renault 5 is highly relevant as Renault's new electric car for the masses – a car that has been given a retro design similar to the original cars that saw the light of day in 1972. Now the first model is being brought to light again. Renault 5

This Renault Floride Coupé is pictured here on Terje's cars earlier. Floride is the first edition of this model. The next edition was called Caravelle. The reason why the Floride name was dropped was that the car was to be launched in the USA and there it was believed that Floride (Florida) would not work as a model name. I have also included a photo of a Renault Dauphine - one with an "Export" mark on the back - probably a model from 1964 or later which was also - or was to be - exported to the USA. Pontiac Trans Am

On Sunday we visited the monthly collection of old, special, rare or exclusive cars in Perpignan. We arrived a little late, so people and cars were leaving the event. So good that people take out their beautiful cars on a Sunday, - not only for us who visit the event, but also for everyone who can view the beautiful vehicles along the surrounding roads.

American muscle cars

Do you remember "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds og Sally field who had been assigned to be a "decoy" for the police so that Jerry reed managed to transport a load of Coors beer from Texas to Georgia in 28 hours. To help with the task, they borrowed a Pontiac Trans Am. Today this would be called "product placement". I myself was a young man at the time and wished I was the one driving the Trans Am with beautiful Sally Field by my side.

I've seen several Pontiac Trans Ams - but they haven't been real Trans Ams, - or they've been in very bad shape. A pure Trans Am is a beautiful sight.

One could wonder what the film team behind "Smokey and the Bandit" would have chosen if they couldn't get their hands on a Trans Am. Ford Mustang? Then Burt Reynolds had to settle for a Ford Mustang mk2 – a car that never got the same muscle car status as its predecessor and successors. If the movie had been made today, maybe they could have chosen a Shelby Mustang?

Air-cooled camping cars

Early Volkswagen buses are often called hippie buses, because they were popular among American hippies when the movement started in the late 60s. A hippie bus was a Volkswagen T1 decorated with flowers and psychedelic decorations. At the time, the Volkswagen buses were cheap both in acquisition and operation. Today, a nice hippie bus can reach staggering sums. On Sunday, this tough T1 with Belgian plates stopped by the car meet. It served as a means of transport and a home for the owner and his dog. I think that when you travel in such a great bus it is not difficult to make friends on the trip.

Peugeot Classics

I can't remember the last time I saw a Peugeot 604. They have simply disappeared and no one seems to see any value in looking after them. Truth be told, Peugeot did not manage to create any prestige model of the 604. Many problems arose during a turbulent time for the company. But the Peugeot 604 looks fantastic!

French and special

In France, the unsnobbish van Citroen C15 has the same status as the Volvo Duett had at home in Norway. The C15 is cheap, unsnobbish, simple and almost immortal considering that this was a model based on the Citroen Visa. One could probably also add that the C15 is a car that has a masculine and tough feel. The pictured C15 is, as far as I can see, a regular C15D with an external air intake and creative paintwork. The fact that it looks like a 4×4 can be defended by the fact that the C15, with its long suspension travel and drive on the front wheels, has impressively good passability in rough terrain.

Serra Bugs

By Curt Fauskanger, guest writer (text and photo)

serra bugs

Yes, here comes another newsletter from Brazil with local VW stories and events, - the story of the "SERRA BUGS" car event, which is the eighth in the series, in the "village" of ITAIPAVA.

It started with a coffee chat in the office, a summer day (winter day actually) after I came back down to Rio after a short summer holiday (winter holiday actually) in August. Still confused? Good…

The seasons are, as you might understand, the opposite down here, so it's very easy to get confused when we talk about what we're going to do in a given holiday season, when you have to switch between who you're talking to, Rio colleagues or family at home. In any case, since the temperature or looking out the window does not help, as it does at home, one must actually check the calendar.

Well, we quickly found out that a car meet that is not too far away, and which also takes place on a weekend - we must be able to find that. As said, so done. Pleasant colleagues, as well as previously mentioned colleague Arcindo, hinted at a car meeting already the following weekend, and only a short drive away. I therefore received an invitation via Instagram to a meeting called "Serra Bugs", which was the eighth in a series of annual meetings for this small club in Itaipava outside Petropolis.

serra bugs

My colleague Einar and I agreed to book a hotel and go on a trip. The problem was that I still hadn't got the Brazilian license, so then we either had to hire a car with a driver, or take a bus. The latter was not very tempting, but after casually mentioning the upcoming excursion during another coffee break with my boss Andre Pires, he volunteered as driver and tour guide as his wife had gone away just this weekend, and that he could also say that he liked both cars and beer. YES! Thus, the plan was in the box. A lovely little Fiat was hired for the trip, and 3 adults in this little gunpowder case should be a fun experience on our excursion.

What I was NOT aware of was that there was a little "Ayrton Senna" (a local and somewhat famous car man) living in my boss! And the trip from Rio de Janeiro city, via Petropolis, therefore became an experience with hands clasped in the roof strap, on a two-lane road up the mountain side with slalom maneuvering between cars and screeching tires, in addition, the stomach muscles really got rid of balls of laughter as the trip progressed forth. In any case, we arrived safely after approx. 1,5 hours to the small town of Itaipava. We found the incredibly cozy hotel we had booked, which actually felt more like visiting a friend in his luxury home...

After a quick unpacking, we headed down to the park in Itavpava, where the meeting was. And WHAT a hit! A gigantic park with beautiful cars everywhere (97% VW), with beer stalls everywhere, as well as "churrasquieira" (grill/barbecue) in all shapes and sizes. It was also arranged that entry was free, but everyone who handed in 5 kg of food (flour/rice etc) was entered into the draw for a VW Brasillia. This is to give something back to all the poor in the immediate area, as poverty is HUGE in Brazil in general. A fantastically great idea by the club!

The car (VW Brasillia) is very similar to a VW 412 seen from Norwegian eyes, but somewhat shorter. This was placed quite conspicuously approx. 20 meters up in the air, on a mobile crane hook, next to the big LIVE stage. Yes, of course there was live music all day with different bands…

After more than 3000 (!) cars, a few barbecue skewers and maybe a couple of glasses of beer later, we of course ran into a colleague from offshore (what are the odds?) who turned out to both live there, own a VW (the very short one) and who knew the right people at the meeting. Because, of course, there was an SP2 on display, so I had to have a chat with this man. After I was taken to Mr. Galpao and started talking about cars, he says; "All these 5 cars here are mine", and pointed to the row of various cars (not just VW). "That's right!", I answered shortly. "Not bad to have 5 identical cars at the same meeting". My chin dropped quite far to my chest when he responded with "Yes, 5 may seem like a lot, but I have 150 cars in total..." (of all days; what kind of guy is this?)

Of course, I had to find out more about this, and quickly returned to my local colleague to find out more about this figure and his claim. Yes, it could be confirmed that this man had approx. 150 cars and had inherited them all from his father who was a very big car collector in Itaipava, and who was well known in the veteran environment as a passionate car collector and restorer of old vehicles. WOW! We MUST be able to check this out, right? What does it take to get a look at these cars?

Yes, his mechanic was standing right across the street and willingly talked about all these stripped down cars they had a full time keeping running, as almost all of them were in very good condition or restored to their original condition. He could of course show us the cars if it was OK for the owner? Yes!!

It was then agreed to meet at a specified address the following day at 08:00 (!) I couldn't help but accept this invitation, although something in the back of my mind protested wildly at the time, as years of experience tell me that this could be VERY early after a long evening of cars , food, beer and music (and of course good company).

Of course, the back of your mind was absolutely right, because back at the hotel there was a billiards tournament with the other guests late into the night. The next morning I woke up to my boss standing in the middle of my room calling my name, and thought I had to get on my feet if the agreement was not to be broken.

I managed to drag myself out of bed and could ascertain that I was sleeping very heavily with a combination of a lot of drink, and both hearing aids on charge... He thought the worst since I hadn't answered all his phone calls, and not least the pounding on my door like the rest of the hotel heard... but not me... After a quick breakfast, we got into the car, only one hour behind the agreed attendance, but fortunately my colleague and the mechanic had persevered and waited for these strange Norwegians.

The gigantic gate opened, and -WOW- what a sight greeted us! One polished car after another was lined up in a large garage, sorted by car type, year model, colour, size, yes, you name it! Damn flat so raw! I think the pictures manage to convey most things, but still have to say that everyone should have experienced this, because the quality and presentation of each individual vehicle was magical. Of course, it wasn't just VW, but they were fairly overrepresented.

There was also a separate department with both MCs and mopeds. In fact, he also had all the Honda CB Super Bike sizes from the 70s as well. And a separate department with all the Yamaha DT 125cc models, every year from 1980 to 1990. In addition, he had some 275cc motocrossers, of the Agral SXT 275 brand, but this is beyond the author's knowledge without Googling...

In addition, there was a long line of other motorbikes, and even ordinary tricycles of unknown makes, but a rich and fun selection that was a feast for the eyes.

Own range of both Chervrolet's (Opala), some selected Mopar, Ford, various Japanese, French and not least a lovely little yellow Fiat Sport Coupe 850. Also an impressive collection of all sorts of rarities through the -70s and -80s with everything from MC helmets to telephones (even a Norwegian 1967 model) and refrigerators and model cars.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, and hope there will be as much space as possible in this article, because I sent a lot of pictures!

Veteran car day at Tofte

veteran car day
Atmospheric during the Veteran Car Day at Tofte

A piece of fringe Norway

For many years, Tofte has lived in the shadow of the large cellulose factory which has now been razed to the ground. Back then, the small town is left as an outlying place, even though the distance to Oslo is only a short hour. Apart from the car park, the main street appears to have remained unchanged since 1980. This makes the place an ideal location for the annual Veteran Car Day. It's a car meet where the street is closed to make room for the guests' cars. The surrounding buildings form a nice frame for the cars.

Wide range of vehicles

The first thing I spotted was a red DeTomaso Pantera next to two Wartburgs. Wartburgs were common, simmering two-strokes in the 60s. Italian Pantera, on the other hand, few had seen in reality. What makes Veteran Car Day interesting for car enthusiasts is the wide range of vehicles. Here you can actually find cars that don't come to car meets very often - cars that were everyday cars a few decades ago. You can also find car brands that no longer exist, such as DeSoto, Studebaker, Borgward and Rambler.

Nice hiking trails

One good argument for bringing your fine car to the Veteran Car Day at Tofte in early September is also the nice hiking trails - whether you come via Filtvedt or Klokkarstua. Classic country roads that wind through a slightly hilly landscape with lots of nice things to see along the way. If you want to extend your trip outside Hurumlandet, you can take the Drøbak tunnel to the east or the car ferry across the Svelviksundet to the west.

DeTomaso Pantera GT5

This car was probably never sold in Norway as new. When the cars were new, you could only buy them as toy cars. Several have later acquired a real Pantera. At the moment there are actually 72 De Tomaso Pantera cars in Norway. The Pantera is equipped with a Ford V8 engine, centrally positioned at the rear. It both sounds and runs really well! But Ford was not just a subcontractor – they bought into the company and sold the cars in the US. The collaboration lasted from 1971 to 1975. It was probably the oil crisis that caused Ford to withdraw. After the breach, production continued in low volume. The Pantera was actually produced until 1993, but was redesigned twice in 1980 and in 1990. From 1980 as the Pantera GT5 and from 1990 as the Pantera 90. The De Tomaso car brand still exists. The rights have been acquired by a company in Hong Kong that builds cars in a very small volume for extremely rich people.

Opel Manta A 1900 SR

Did you know that the Opel Manta is named after a devil skate of the same name? A huge stingray that swims gracefully around the great oceans with wings and a tail? In 1971, the Manta's beautiful appearance made a big impression on myself and other young car enthusiasts. The Manta A was, by today's standards, simple, rear-wheel drive cars based on the Opel Ascona A. The car in the picture is a 1900 SR which originally produced 90 HP. It was registered before the new signs were introduced on 1 April 1971 and is thus an early edition.

Jaguar XJ 4,2 Coupe

The most beautiful XJ model is without a doubt this gorgeous coupé variant without a center pillar. It is based on the XJ with a short wheelbase. The model was produced until 1979. The engine options were a 4,2 liter straight six or a 5,3 liter V12.

Opel Rekord 1,9 E1

Opel uses a letter to indicate model order. Rekord E is thus number 5 in the series, and the last model under the model name "Rekord". The last Rekord was in production from the 1978 model year up to and including 1986. It received a facelift for the 1983 model year. The two series are often referred to as E1 and E2. The facelift involved a completely new front and rear section, as well as new engines. The pictured car belongs to E1. It is rare to see an Opel Rekord E in such fine condition. Not only are all Rekorders today vintage cars, but also Opel classics.

Opel Record E

Opel Ascona

It was slightly wider, slightly longer and slightly faster than its predecessor. The Ascona B was a car that was on many people's wish lists - and that evokes good memories today. Among the engines delivered to Norway were the 1,3 S (75 HP), 1,9 S (90 HP). The Ascona was the sister model to the more sporty Manta model. Ascona B could also be delivered with larger engines, such as 2,0 S (100 HP), 2,0 E with injection 110 HP, as well as 2,4 E (144 HP). The Ascona 400 did well in WRC rally with a trimmed version of the 2,4 liter engine. The Asconas became popular, both as family cars - and later as youth cars. The cars had a great, GM-inspired design - and ran well. I myself have driven the Ascona 1,9 S when it was relatively new - and am left with good impressions. On the road, it delivered well in all branches. A car that was easy to like and which are sought-after projects for conversions. I hope many keep them original too.

Audi B2 Coupe GT

There was no real "schwung" over Audi until the Quattro system came along. It was in 1980 and then it was the B2 Coupé bodywork that was used in the so-called "ur-Quattro". The results in motorsport gave Audi a lift up the status scale. The beautiful B2 Coupé is one of the most beautiful Audis ever made. They were based on the sedan model's platform and engine choice with front-wheel drive. B2 Coupé/GT are cars many people want as a hobby car.

Cadillac Coupe Deville 429 Convertible

The Deville 3 was produced between 1965 and 1970, with small cosmetic changes each year that made customers change cars more often. Engine-wise, the V8 was the only choice – 429 V8 (7 litres) until 1968, then 472 V8 (7,7 litres). A Deville in this period is around 5,7 meters long, just over 2 meters wide and weighs over 2 tonnes. Deville could be delivered as 4 doors with pillar, 4 and 2 door Hardtop (without pillar), as well as Convertible. The car pictured is probably a 1965 model.

Mercury Cougar XR7

Hidden lights created a tough front end. As far as I know, there was no regular import of Mercury Cougar to Norway, only individual imports via private individuals. The first model generation was sold as model year 1967 through 1970. The Mercury Cougar got the same V8 engines as the Ford Mustang for the corresponding model year. It concerned only V8s – primarily 289, 302, 351 and 390 cubic inches – but also Ford's 7-litre V8 427 and 428 engines.

Early Ford Consul 1700 V4 Coupe

It came as a surprise when Ford chose to replace its successful M models – the 17M and 20 M. The new Consul and Granada were not only to replace the M models, but also the English Zephyr and Zodiac. Seen in today's eyes, there was little to distinguish Consul from Granada. There were equipment details, grill, interior and chrome. In the beginning, you could choose the 2-door Consul Coupé as an entry-level model, or the 4-door sedan and station wagon. The transition between 17M/20M and Consul/Granada took place at the turn of 1971 to 1972. Based on the registration number, the car in the picture is one of the very first Ford Consuls in this country, registered early in 1972 and delivered with a 1700 V4 engine from the Taunus series. In my opinion, these first Coke-bottle shaped cars are the most beautiful of all the Consul/Granadas. They are also rare, especially with the 17M-V4 engine. Highly preserved cars!

17-May ripple in Re

At precisely 10 o'clock, cars from Re Motorklubb were ready to embark on a 3-hour journey through the surrounding villages. The event was approved by the police and Tønsberg municipality. The first stop was the health center nearby, then it was towards Ramnes, over towards Linnestad, up to Revetal again and on to Undrumsdal and Våle. When it's raining, it may not be as tempting to take the nice car out. But all the donnings seemed to cope well with the weather.

Re motor club consists of over 200 owners of hobby vehicles. This year, as last year, they go around the villages to make 17 May more pleasant for young and old.

The picture gallery contains 19 pictures. They may need a few seconds to download. The editors have several photos that have not been published.

Not all at once

The goal for this Sunday trip was the Norwegian Vehicle History Museum. About a year ago, the museum was opened near the Norwegian road museum at Hunderfossen. The museum manages a large reservoir of cars where only a selection is shown to you at any one time. It gives the opportunity to create separate exhibitions on varying themes. If you visited the museum last year, you will find new things there this year. That makes the place a good destination for Sunday trips - with a freshly washed nice car. The place north of Lillehammer is well suited for day trips from all over the interior. If you come from the Oslo area, you can drive on quiet roads via Feiring and Toten, or highway 4.

Where nice cars meet

On the opening date of 9 June 2019, beautiful vintage vehicles from all over Norway showed up. Several arrived in motorcades. Nice vintage cars still appear in the large car park outside the museum. Since it is no longer free to hold car meets with the public present, the car clubs now organize outings where a limited number of cars drive together and meet in places like this. Also last Sunday, a group of great donors turned up. A group of stylish Jaguars and another group of fat, humming BMWs. A bonus exhibition for us other Sunday drivers 🙂

Outside the Norwegian Museum of Vehicle History

All photos are taken outside. I took more photos than the ones shown here. They will eventually be archived in the Car catalog together with other fine cars.

Sports car meeting at Sjøflyhavna

norwegian sports car club
Lamborghini Huracan facing classic BMWs

Large span in vehicles

Members of Norwegian Sportscar Club had agreed to meet at Sjøflyhavna outside Oslo. I like the diversity in the association - on cars, that is. It can be English, Italian, French, American, German or Japanese – expensive or cheap – big or small – new or old. I don't know if the association actually has any criteria for which cars can be included, but I think one of the common denominators for the members is that they agree with the association's motto:

We still play with cars.

Pictures

This picture shows some of the span between the cars. A Toyota MR2 mk1 on the far left, Ferrari 458 and Honda NSX with Mazda MX-5 mk1 in the background - and some fat Germans on the right.

Huracàn LP 640-4 Performante with the Equinor building in the background. In accordance regnr.info there are 38 Huracàn's in Norway. With the Volkswagen group behind it financially and Audi engineers behind the scenes, Lamborghini is a safe choice - for those who can afford such a car.

Porsche 997

A Porsche 911 (997) GT-3 with a steel cage is hard to pass by without taking a closer look.

bmw z1

The BMW Z1 is an extremely rare car. It's the forerunner of the Z3 and Z4, and so on, – but it's built completely differently. Much more daring – with fiberglass bodywork on a tubular steel frame, doors that fold down into the bodywork. The engine is taken from the 3-series E36 of the time. I think the Z1 was only delivered with the straight six from the 325. There are only 8 BMW Z1s registered in Norway. (the blurring of the lights is due to dew on the inside of the Plexiglas).

biturbo

There were two great Maserati Biturbos. This is a model I associate with the yappiness era of the 80s. A car for those who thought German cars were too boring. The Biturbo was the first model to be produced with a twin-turbo V6. Production took place during a turbulent period in the company's history, and quite a few faults with the cars were reported. They look fantastic, and sound really good. I think the cars do better as enthusiast cars than as toys for japers.

3200 GT
The Maserati 3200 GT are underrated GT cars that were built with professional assistance from Ferrari itself.

The engine is a 3,2-litre twin turbo V8 32V – in the standard version 370 HP. You can now import this classic without a one-off tax on the 20-year rule. On the left is the Maserati 228 - slightly larger than the standard Biturbo and with a 2,8 V6 twin-turbo.

Classic Morgan - ready for the holiday trip? There have been more Morgans on the road lately. Hand-built cars after a read from the 50s. Newer models have of course been developed - but all in the same spirit. It makes me think I'll have to head out to Malvern soon to book a test drive. The Morgan factory has done business on people who dream of driving an open Morgan through English country roads.

morgan plus 4

This car looks brand new - completely polished. Is it new? – or restored? That's the beauty of Morgan. The design is timeless and classic. If you take good care of your car, you will probably have a car that you can drive for the rest of your life.

Cars and Coffee, Øvrevoll Gallop

gallop
In front of Øvrevoll: Jaguar Mark 2 and Porsche 911 Carrera 993.

Cars and Coffee is a car meeting for all car categories - and ditto owners. Last Sunday, Cars and Coffee organized Asker and Bærum meeting at Øvrevoll Galopp outside Oslo. Within a couple of hours, vehicles from 1912 to 2019 appeared.

I arrived with a bunch of stripped down Harleys. On the two-wheel side, there was a high level of nostalgia with, among other things, the 60s Tempolett Corvette and a sleek Tempo Trygg.

I was impressed by two newcomers to the supercar class, the Bentley Continental and the 4-door AMG GT 63 S. I also got to study extremely rare American car history, prestigious Citroëns and a number of other great classics.

New Bentley Continental GT W12

gallop
2019 Bentley Continental mk3

Now the 3rd generation has arrived. In many ways a supercar in sheep's clothing. The 12-cylinder W12 engine produces 635 HP and has a torque of 900 Nm. Consumption in mixed driving is 1,22 litres/mile. This car in Orange Flame costs NOK 3 including delivery. W390 means that the cylinders are organized in a W shape. This means that the engine has a shorter length than a V-shape made up of two straight sixes. The arrangement also means that you get more power and better torque.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S 4D Coupé

For me, it was the first time I got to study the 4-door version of AMG's fine GT coupé up close. 4-liter V8 engine, biturbo, 639 HP in matte Graphite Gray Magno, looked absolutely stunning. The pictured model is for sale as an 8-month-old used car at Bertel O Steen Ullevål. It has, among other things, 21 inch wheels, 9-speed Gtronic, air suspension, electronic diff lock, alcantara/leather interior with performance steering wheel in alcantara, sports exhaust, Burmester sound system, Distronic Plus and more. The price is 2 including re-registration. Please note that demo/sales cars in this class are often driven excessively hard - not by potential buyers, but by the sellers.

Ferrari replica – Made by Pontiac

gallop
Pontiac Fiero Mera Conversion (1987-1988).

A bizarre – but true – story. The pictured car looks like a Ferrari 308, but is in reality a 1987-1988 Pontiac Fiero. "Replica", you might be thinking, - and that is partly correct. Few cars are more popular as a donor car for replica projects. The American budget car Fiero has suitable dimensions, a fiberglass body and a mid-mounted engine. Just replace the fiberglass plates, and you have a "Ferrari look-alike". This gave Pontiac management a bright idea. Through the dealership, you could order a Pontiac Fiero Mera - just like the car in the picture. It was marketed as a new model. Pontiac hoped that customers would nod in recognition to the car that Tom Selleck from the TV series Magnum PI drove around in. The Ferrari 308 GTB. It was just outside. Under the fiberglass shell, everything was still 100% Pontiac Fiero. The interior, the seats and the engine – a GM V6 135 HP. Do you think Ferrari accepted Pontiac's "new" model? - Nothing! They went to court and had the project stopped. 247 cars were built. The Mera is therefore one of the world's rarest cars - and one of them was therefore at Øvrevoll Galopp this Sunday!

A real American

When I'm at a car event, I also shoot pictures outside. Not all car enthusiasts take their car inside with them. This International Scout is such an example. It is the size of a Jeep Wrangler and powered by the same engines – inline-fours, inline-sixes or V8s. According to the papers, there is a 3,2 liter inline four in the pictured car. The car and tractor brand International harvester today has cult status in the United States. In Norway, the International is quite unknown, although several Internationals have been used as fire trucks. Off-roaders are not just Jeep, Bronco and Blazer. It will be a bit like Coke. Everyone thinks that Americans can only choose between Coke or Pepsi. Real Americans like to drink Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew or RC Cola, Cola brands only found in the USA. If you drive International Scout, it is almost mandatory to have a red-checked lumberjack shirt and ball cap, Merle Haggard on the radio - and RC Cola in the soda holder 🙂

Prestige Citroens

gallop
Citroen SM.

Citroen SM – an icon from the time when Citroen owned Maserati. As is well known, Citroën took over Maserati in 1968 until they themselves were taken over by PSA in 1974. Maserati developed the engine in the SM – a V6 of 2,7 litres. It was later further developed for later Maserati models, including the Quattroporte. The beautiful design, air suspension and ultra-modern interior were created by Citroen.

I discovered the SM as soon as I arrived. Close by was a great DS, facelifted model from 1968 to 1975 – the same era as the SM. Both the DS and SM are classics that belong among the most beautiful and prestigious cars in the whole world. When I visited the prestigious London Concours earlier this year, there were two DSs on display beautifully lowered onto the lawn. Real crowd favourites.

BMW 2002 tii

gallop
Spotless BMW 2002 tii finished in Golf Yellow.

I got my driving license in 1976. Then the BMW 3-series (E21) had just been launched as a replacement for the 02-series (E10). The folk model 1502 was still in production. The amount of money 18-year-olds have is limited. At least it wasn't enough for the dream car – BMW 2002 ti. As far as I can remember, these cars never came up for sale. I guess a drivable BMW 2002 has always had a pretty high value. It is a smooth-driving car with beautiful looks and sound mechanics - seen through today's eyes.

One of the biggest eye-catchers at Sunday's Cars and Coffee (in my own humble mind) was a completely stripped BMW 2002 tii (Touring Injection International). The model came in 1971, with mechanical "einspritzung" and 130 HP A BMW 2002 in this condition is in a high price range, not least further south in Europe. This is a car that is mandatory in organized tours and races across the Alps and Pyrenees.

Square taillights replaced round ones from the 1974 model.
