While the rest of the motoring press reports on the driving experiences in the D4, D5 and T8 Twin Engine, I can report that I have finally gotten behind the wheel of Volvo's smallest diesel engine, the new D2 with the internal designation D4204T20.

 

Well, it's not really a completely new design, but a down-tuned version of the D3 engine. Instead of 150 HP, we've got 120 HP and a lower one-time fee. An engine for you and me, – those of us who like Volvo, – and who need a robust everyday vehicle, – and don't want to pay the price in fees.
 
I chuckle a little when I think that while people are running out of their homes to secure the new, gorgeous V90, sitting jeg in one of Volvo's perhaps most side-drummed cars, the V70. And not only that, the car has automatic transmission. With me behind the wheel, the donning weighs almost 1700 kg. With 120 horses and automatic. Seriously?
 
I was prepared for a big yawn.
 
I am trying to compare with the outgoing D2, - the 115 HP engine which is shared with, among others, Citroën and Peugeot. It will be difficult to compare, because I have previously driven D2 with only manual 6-speed gearboxes, - not automatic.
 
As is well known, extra high demands are placed on how the power is delivered when you have a turbo-diesel engine that operates within narrow rpm ranges. Especially when it comes to the weakest engines. With a torque of 280 Nm at 1500-2250 revs, the D2 engine is not exactly weak, but the automatic gearbox is required to be correctly programmed. - That's it. Volvo's robotic gearshift solution, Geartronic, works very well.

I don't know if the Eco meter is common to all V70s, or if it is only found in cars with the D2 engine, - as a kind of extension of the eDrive concept? I think the Eco-meter on the instrument panel belongs to the 80s. Anyway, I have previously stated that the Eco-meter was at least not necessary in the old D2 engines because it was not possible to drive uneconomically with the 115 horse. With the new D2 and Geartronic it is different. Now it is possible to drive robbed. On damp autumn roads, it is easy to get wheelspin if you press hard on the gas from a standstill. With the V70's luxurious sound insulation, the sound image is fine. If I didn't know better, I would have thought I was driving the 150 horse.
 
From 80 km/h upwards, the V70 falls into economy mode. It doesn't feel as responsive to the gas, and it seems like it doesn't want to downshift at the very first thing. I try my hand by tilting the gear lever to the left where I can shift manually. Then the cash register immediately shifts down one notch. It's enough to give me the little kick I need for overtaking before I flip back into automatic.
 
When I drive an automatic, I want the tiller to follow and adapt to the movements of my accelerator. In a modern car, it should not be necessary to use other operating instruments. I am still satisfied with the new D2 and Geartronic, and realize that somewhere or other you must notice that you are driving a down-tuned engine.

The Volvo V70 is not in Volvo's model range for 2017. There is no denying that it feels a bit old-fashioned, especially around the dashboard. If you are looking for a V70, you must find unsold 2016 models or demo models. The V70 is a full-size family car. It feels solid, heavy, big and secure. On the road, you notice that other motorists in a way show respect, almost reverence. That says something about how people perceive Volvo as a brand. Those of us who drive several car models often experience differences in how people react to different vehicles.
 
If you are going to buy the V70, I have no qualms about recommending the new D2 engine with 120 horses and automatic transmission. I would also recommend the safety package with lane departure warning, blind spot warning and distance warning.
 
If I were to point out something negative, it would have to be the start and stop system which stops the engine far too early, in fact before the car has stopped. This means that the starter is often activated while the engine is running.
 
Right now there are six well-equipped almost brand new V70s with the new D2 engine and Geartronic on Finn.no (find which ones) at prices between NOK 400 and 450. It's a lot of car for the money. You have to put NOK 000 more on the table for a V100.
 

But you don't get that with the new D2 engine 😉

Automatic or manual transmission?

polo2010shiftIf you considered buying a new car with an automatic transmission ten years ago, you would have been told that you could never expect to get anything back from the automatic transmission surcharge when trading in. This has changed a lot. Demand for automatic transmission cars has increased - not least on the second-hand market.

There are the following 3 main types of automatic transmission. All automatically shift for you, but still behave quite differently:

  • Conventional automatic transmission (hydraulics with torque converter)
  • Continuously variable transmissions (CVT)
  • Robotic gear change

Conventional automatic transmissions shift when the engine speed increases. The transmission between the engine and the transmission is via hydraulic oil and not directly connected as in a manual transmission. The result is increased comfort because fewer movements are transmitted from the transmission and axles into the passenger compartment. The disadvantage is that the solution steals power from the engine on its way to the wheels. This means that you have to expect higher fuel consumption compared to other solutions. CO2 emissions also increase, - and with it the one-time tax and your purchase price. Conventional automatic transmissions are an expensive solution in Norway.

Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) transmit power between the engine and drive shafts via a metal belt that adjusts the gear ratio steplessly. This means that there is no jerking when changing gears and that the engine can be kept in its most optimal speed range at all times. There is almost no energy loss with this transmission solution. It can be a bit unusual to drive a car with a completely continuously variable gear ratio. Although the technology is different, the CVT solution works in principle in the same way as gearless scooters and chainsaws! Most CVT gearboxes have the option of shifting gears manually. In this case, preset, fixed ratios are selected along the belt path.

Robotized gear shifting is the solution that has seen the greatest growth in recent years. The solution is based on a robot that clutches and shifts gears for you based on electronic analysis of the engine, the car's inclination and the driver's pedal use, etc. When the gear is engaged, the transmission between the engine and drive shafts works just like a manual gearbox. The disadvantage of this solution is that the robot shifts too slowly, but major improvements have been made here, including a so-called double clutch solution that can prepare the next gear shift before you need it. The advantage is that the electronics can calculate optimal gear shifts and thus reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to manual transmission.

Hill start, snow and queuing

Conventional automatic transmission holds the car so that it does not roll backwards at all when starting on a hill. An inexperienced driver need not fear that the car will roll backwards. Other automatic transmission solutions are combined with a "hillholder" function to ensure problem-free hill starts. The cars I've driven with robotic gear changes keep the car on the ground for about 3 seconds. This is enough time to move your right leg from the brake pedal to the gas pedal. "Hill holder" is supplied as standard/additional equipment on many cars today, so that this handy function is also available on manual cars.

You should be aware that some of the most primitive robotic gearshift solutions lack the ability to lock the gearbox to a single gear, which can cause problems when driving in extremely difficult conditions with ice and snow.

You are going up a steep hill full of snow. You drive with a primitive robotic gearbox. You accelerate so that the car shifts up into first, second... oops! … third! At the steepest point, the cash register must downshift to second gear. The time this takes means you lose speed and grip in the snow.

In traffic jams with frequent start-stops, automatic transmissions have major advantages over manual cars. Instead of "filing" the clutch, you hold the car with the brake. On manual cars, a lot of driving in traffic jams causes a lot of wear on the clutch. Please note that robotic transmission solutions use the clutch almost as much as if you had driven with a manual transmission. It is admittedly easier and more comfortable to drive in a queue, but the wear on the clutch is therefore almost the same. I say "almost" because such solutions often have many gears (7-8) and it also often includes one or two gears that are lower than the first gear on a manual gearbox. This allows the car to drive at extremely low speeds without wearing out the clutch.

My choice

My choice falls on a robotic gear change from one of the major car manufacturers. It offers the most advantages and provides the best driving pleasure. Some car manufacturers supply both robotic gear changes and CVT solutions (e.g. Audi and Toyota). Then I would choose a drive unit with a robotic solution rather than a CVT. I am convinced that it will hold its best in the future. Incidentally, there are only two reasons for me to choose a conventional automatic transmission solution. Either because I have chosen an extremely powerful motor at the absolute top of the price scale, or because I am looking for something very cheap, - at the very bottom of the price scale.
