RøhneSelmer

RøhneSelmer has several departments in Eastern Norway. Occasionally they hold car meets
in collaboration with the car clubs (Asker and Bærum, and Lillestrøm). Worth a visit to look at the Shelby models.

Last Saturday, RøhneSelmer, the Ford dealer in Lillestrøm and lower Romerike, invited to a veteran car day. The space in front of the sales premises was cleared of older Fords and other fine cars.

Events like this are dependent on good weather. As the day began with frost in many places, several visitors had to wait to take their summer-shod vintage cars out on the road. Some probably chose to stay at home because the meteorologists had predicted rain. The experienced conference host Per Christian Håveødegård as usual kept the show going. One of his tasks was to entice people inside to look at the offers of the Ford dealer in Lillestrøm and Nedre Romerike. He said that RøhneSelmer had a basement full of great electric cars for sale - and added that it was pure Elkjøp : )

Ford Cortina 1600E in the picture on the right were not common in Norway. I'm not sure if any were even sold new. E stands for "Executive" and was the top model with upgraded seats, dashboard and door sides in full walnut, glossy moldings and alloy wheels. The drivetrain was taken from the Cortina GT. An ideal company car for UK sales managers.

From autumn 1967, the "Taunus" designation was removed from Ford's M models. The models were designated by a number followed by "M" for "Meisterstück". From left, Ford 26M with 2600 V6 and Ford 20M 2300 V6. Originally, the Ford 26M was not a common sight in Norway. But in recent times it is jokingly said that Norwegians have vacuumed Europe for 26M cars. The black car is a P7A – a model that got a completely new design after just one year. Shame, really, because the design with the little hip snap and fake air intake on the hood looks really great.

The Return of the Jeepster

After the war tried Willy's Overland to meet the growing demand for private cars by offering the Jeep in a civilian version. From 1950, the "normal" car industry was back on its feet and Jeepster production was therefore closed down. Several years later – in 1966 – it returned in a new edition as Jeepster Commando with 4-wheel drive. The Jeep shape is iconic and strongly linked to the USA, although the model was also built by EBRO in Spain under the name "Comando" (with one M) where it could also be supplied with diesel. Several of the cars are still in operation down there.

Taunus vs. Cortina mk3

Ford Taunus 1.6 GXL

Taunus and Cortina mk3 are often referred to as "Ford TC" because they are quite similar models. From 1971 to 1973 – the Cortina was still produced in Dagenham, UK, while the German Ford was produced in Ghent, Belgium. Both shared the same chassis and engines, but the Cortina had a more marked "Coke bottle" design and a different front. The combination of Taunus and Cortina did not happen until Taunus II went into production. Both models were then produced at the same plant in Belgium.

The Volvo limousine was rebuilt at the bodywork company Nilsson. The Volvo 760 GLE transported royalty and prominent politicians. If you own a car like that today, can you earn a few kroner by driving to weddings and proms, - or perhaps use it as a "pilsner car"?

Car on the plain

Lamborghini Scrambled

Last Sunday, the 9 largest car dealers invited everyone with a passion and interest in motoring and mobility to an open house. At some of these dealers we also find special supercars. Here are the highlights.

Lamborghini at Brooklands Motors

One of the highlights was the Norwegian premiere of the new Lamborghini Revuelto. What makes this model special is that it is the first Lamborghini with a hybrid drivetrain. But one should not imagine that this is an environmentally friendly car. The batteries are there to provide an optimal driving experience, 1015 hp, 725 Nm with three electric motors, two that distribute the power to the front wheels and one that controls the power at the rear from the V12 engine. The battery pack is 3,8 kwh, rechargeable, and estimated to give a maximum range of 10 km - but still enough to keep the over 1000 horses alive. When you study the lines of the Revuelto, there is nothing that bears the stamp of anything other than fun and driving pleasure. It looks really mischievous with super short rear overhangs and the exhaust straight out at face height for those driving behind.

In the premises of Lamborghini in Billingstad there were also two classics, a Miura and the Countach itself. Outside was an Urraco – very rare cars these days. When these models were produced, Lamborghini was in a far more turbulent existence than today. Today, the Volkswagen group is behind it with German engineers behind the scenes. The Miura was not a bad car, but it had its weaknesses which have been fixed over the years. The Miura is one of the world's most beautiful cars. The "eyebrows" made the model overly feminine for some, but they could be removed. The Countach is a symbol of a car that is uncompromisingly raw, but very impractical with no view to the rear when backing up, for example. I'm sure that today's Revuelto is equipped with a reversing camera.

Bronco at RøhneSelmer

RøhneSelmer in Billingstad has extensive experience in organizing car meets - including Cars on the plain. We have been there several times together with veteran car owners. As usual, the barbecue was over the area and the families flocked to it. The draw for me was a green Ford Bronco Outer Banks parked at the entrance. inside, a beautiful Mustang mk1 Convertible graced the premises.

Ford Bronco's comeback

One would think that the Bronco model went into the grave after TV broadcasts of OJ Simpson's white Bronco fleeing from the police were shown. Before that, the model was known to flip over the smallest thing. Although all this happened in the USA, I have no faith that the Bronco will be a success in Norway. Today's Bronco is manufactured in Mexico and the 2,7 V6 EcoBoost engine has already gained a bad reputation due to several engine failures with early cars. The trailer weight is only 1250 kg and the price is close to NOK 1,9 million. The positive thing about the Bronco is its American heritage – firstly because of the name, which derives from the American watch horse – secondly that the model for the current Bronco model was designed around the same time as the Mustang mk1 – in the happy sixties.

Defender at Motorpool

The Land Rover Defender is also designed with clear similarities to earlier, legendary models. Land Rover can deliver cars with plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid drivetrains, which makes them quite affordable - if you can use such an expression for cars that cost over a million kroner. It seems many people are waiting for the all-electric Defender to arrive in 2025. Under Bil på sletta, representatives from the Norwegian Jaguar Club presented beautiful cars.

McLaren at Bymedhus

Many had made their way to Bymedhus. They sell exclusive and special cars in a high price range. Outside, among other things, was the large Rolls Royce SUV Cullinan – a car for people with floppy hats. I had more sense for a McLaren Artura standing in the doorway. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 3 hp 6-liter V585 engine and a 95 hp electric motor - which together produce 680 hp and can do 0-100 km/h in 2,9 seconds. They have one for sale for NOK 3,5 million. So one might ask how much it would have cost if it wasn't a rechargeable hybrid?

Ferrari and Maserati at Formula Automobile

Formula Automobile often has nice cars parked outside. When I'm nearby, I make sure to walk the dog past there. I note several signs that say Maserati's new SUV Grecale will come as an electric car (Grecale Folgore) after the summer with a price tag of NOK 1,4 million. It is certainly on the wish list of many. I think Ferrari's first hybrid model 296 is interesting. If you look through the rear window, you can't see any marked profile of either the V8 or the V12. The engine will be a 3 liter twin turbo V6 with a 120 degree angle which may not be as visual as easily. The petrol engine produces 663 hp. Together with the electric motor, the drive provides a whopping 830 hp and a torque of 740. The car's weight has been kept low, for a hybrid. The car in the pictures has a curb weight without driver of just 1532 kg. The battery pack's capacity is 7,45 kWh. Like the Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura, the hybrid drivetrain has been developed primarily for performance and driving pleasure. A used Ferrari 296 GTB is advertised for sale at Bymedhus for NOK 4,5 million.

Veteran car day at RøhneSelmer Lillestrøm

Two Granadas from the end of the production period pose in front of RøhneSelmer Lillestrøm's premises.

"Relationship building" is probably a marketing term that fits well with Saturday's veteran car day at RøhneSelmer Lillestrøm.

It is not unlikely that those who have an Anglia, Cortina or 17M also have a newer Ford in the household. The event at RøhneSelmer naturally also attracts more or less casual viewers. It should do well to pass a Cortina GT, Consul Coupé, Granada 2,8i Ghia or a canary yellow Anglia 250 Van without stopping by.

Doing Ford business in the "old days" must have been a goldmine. For a long time, Ford had two completely different model programs from England and Germany, in addition to the cars they imported from the USA. Even French Simca delivered cars to Ford dealers in Norway. You could study a bit of this diversity at the Ford dealer in Lillestrøm last Saturday.

I strolled around and photographed the cars on display, which are otherwise owned by private individuals. The images can be enlarged by clicking on them. Eventually they will also be included in the image archive here at Terjesbiler.no

Photo Saturday – Mustang and Mercedes

Mustang meeting at RøhneSelmer Asker and Bærum

Shelby Mustang GTE

Saturdays in June are good days for photography. Then car meets are organized almost everywhere. In addition, many are out to air their fine car. Then I set off on a trip, - either in a motorized vehicle, or on a trike, like now. I am a car enthusiast, car blogger and car spotter. On nice Saturdays, I like to study nice cars, take pictures of them and publish car stuff online.

The first stop was RøhneSelmer in Billingstad. They organized Mustang get-togethers with country on the stereo and hot dogs on the grill. This is the third year I have visited. Without own Mustang. The space outside was quickly filled up. RøhneSelmer itself has a couple of great cars that they exhibit. Shelby Mustang GTE and Super Snake. The Hottest Mustang Ever!

Shelby Mustang GTE at RøhneSelmer in Billingstad

It is a challenge to take pictures of glossy paint and chrome in broad daylight. You have to find an angle where the sun is not reflected and the shadows do not become too dominant. Another challenge is not to get too many people in the picture, either. Those who do come along should appear in a pose and an expression that they themselves would be able to nod approvingly to. Sometimes I fear that I will photograph someone who is with his mistress from work, at a time when he should actually have been on a sailing trip, - and that his wife will discover him on terjesbiler.no. Anyway, I hope it works out.

Super Mustang

It's not every time you get to study a brand new ShelbyMustang up close. I liked the GTE pictured. I think the Mustang 6 has captured the style of the Mustang 1 in a nice way. It also has the Mustang 5. There are some fantastic versions of them. For example, the one that was voted the public's favourite. A red Cobra convertible. Not the worst vehicle to have when the summer holidays are just around the corner.

Many will probably choose the Mustang 1 as the finest Mustang series. It is impressive to see so many parts available as new - or newly manufactured. The light blue '67 model in the pictures below has been built with a new drivetrain. Ford's 427 (6,8) liter V8. Everything looks brand new. It's fascinating to see how well the over 50-year-old design has held up, despite the absence of computer screens and touch-screens. Analogue clocks apply here.

A great Ferrari 612

mustang
Ferrari 612

On my way out towards Holmen, I spotted a magnificent Ferrari 612 in the car park outside AutoXO. I have published several photos of the Ferrari 612 on terjesbiler.no, but the 612 is such a rare model that I chose to photograph it again. Moreover, it was beautifully "parked solo" against a calm background - and the lighting was just right. As I got into shooting position and got the camera ready, the owner arrived. I felt the situation a bit embarrassing. Why has a gray-haired cyclist positioned himself directly in front of your car in an empty parking lot?

The owner was a gem and offered me to take pictures. I take the liberty of publishing it as well. I only publish pictures of cars liker. The best. And as I drove on towards Holmen, I thought that the beautiful Ferrari made the Mustang GTE look like a Tesla.

Vintage cars on Holmen?

mustang
1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster

I had seen on Facebook that Holmendagen 2018 was being held right now, and that there would be some vintage cars on display. Holmendagen is a kind of family day for residents of the vel'et. The vintage cars were used cars from when I was young myself, including a Volvo Trygge with Frydenlutnd decoration and a Bedford flatbed. It is the same type of distribution van that I myself drove in my younger days. Nostalgic to see how primitive it was inside the cabs. It was difficult to take good pictures.

I still took one photo of a great Jaguar XK140 there. It gives a very special feeling to sit behind the large steering wheel of such a car and look ahead over the bonnet. It's class.

Cadillac Style at Solvik

mustang
Cadillac DeVille 4

On my way back to Oslo, I came across a classic Cadillac at Solvik Båthavn. The car was missing fender skirts, or the owner had chosen to remove them. Other than that, it appeared to be in very good condition and probably hasn't gone very far, either. I note a white Stetson hat on the hat rack and imagine 8-track cassettes with Ella Fitzgerald or Patsy Cline.

Stjerneløpet – Mercedes-Benz arrives in Fornebu

mustang
Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren

When I'm out cycling on nice Saturdays, I stop at places where nice cars can be parked. The area around the old flight tower at Fornebu is such a place. On Saturday, the Stjerneløpet 2018 was held, and Oslo got to see several classic Mercedes-Benzes rolling away in the fine weather. In the afternoon they gathered in Kunstnergaten in Fornebu. There are several art studios and museums there. The old airport buildings go well with the beautiful Mercedes.

The picture above is a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. 5,4 liter V8 with supercharger. A real supercar. I see several cars with license plates from when the cars were new. Several of the cars have probably belonged to the same owner, or the same family over several decades.

Ford enthusiasm

Ford Granada is the bedrock of Norwegian Ford fanatics.

One of the aims of "Terjes Biler" is to spread enthusiasm for cars. Not just supercars, but also ordinary cars, the car you drive on a daily basis. Enthusiasm is about not only choosing a car with your head, but also with your heart.

Perhaps this is what the Ford dealers Røhne Selmer in Billingstad and Lillestrøm were thinking of when they invited owners of classic Ford cars to a Ford meeting. Create enthusiasm for Ford as a car brand. Make people say that “I chose Ford because I liker Ford”, not just because of reason.

Few adults can pass an Escort Mexico, Ford Taunus P7A TS Coupé Hardtop, Lotus Cortina, Granada 2,8 Ghia or Sierra Cosworth without feeling their heart beat a little faster. These were dream cars in their day. That puts Ford in a special position that many other brands do not have, namely history. Car brands such as Tesla, Lexus, Suzuki, Hyundai and KIA, to name a few, lack automotive history. This also includes car brands such as has history, but without being of particular interest to enthusiasts.

Skoda, for example. Or do you remember the hideous Subarus of the 70s? Or what was Audi in the early years? I'm not saying that Ford is better than Lexus and Audi, - but they are has something in its history that is unique. Something worth highlighting.

What does Ford have to offer on the enthusiast front today?

Ford F150 Shelby with 750 horses. It looks big and tough and costs 1,5 million. I don't know if the rear seats are included in that price, but I reckon it can be registered under 3,5 tonnes. The rough terrain tires are of the type you like to use out in the desert or over savannahs, but I don't know how effective they are on asphalt. The car is tall and looks like a monster truck, but decorated like a sponge cake. I am not sure whether the accessibility on terrain is as good as the first impression suggests. Still, it's a vehicle I'd like to put on the list of vehicles you should drive before you die.

The Mustang is another enthusiast car from Ford. You get it not only with the 5,0-liter V8, but also a 2,3-liter Ecoboost turbo engine with 317 horses. You also get the same Ecoboost engine in the Focus RS, then with a whopping 350 horses. Ford does not supply plug-in hybrids, or electric cars with competitive ranges. However, they have interesting engine ranges based on turbo petrol. I think a 1,5 liter with 182 horses can offer both driving pleasure and enthusiasm.

For everyone who once dreamed of the Escort mk1 RS.

How to create brand affinity

In the US, there has always been a rivalry between Ford owners and Chevy owners. It's almost like religion or politics. Either you are a Republican or a Democrat. Either you drink Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Either you drive a Ford or a Chevy.

I have driven the Chevy for a couple of years while overseas. I would never trade my Chevy Silverado for a Ford. I love Cadillac, not Lincoln. I think the Impala/Caprice are decent cars that I have driven a lot as rental cars. I have no similar relationship with Ford. But when it comes to Camaro or Mustang, I have no doubt. It has to be the Mustang – the original of Pony Cars.

It's about feelings. Like the English football team you choose to follow. Is it possible to form feelings for Ford?

- Yay, I've bought a new Focus, sort of.

I visited Røhne and Selmer in Billingstad on Saturday. They organized Mustang meets. I was greeted with country tunes from "Alabama" and a row of classic and new Mustangs. Most Norwegians, myself included, are "closet Americans". If you're a bit fond of cars, you can't let this pass you by. Mustang has remained true to Henry Ford's basic philosophy of building simple, beautiful cars for the people. Well, a new Mustang with a 5,0 V8 probably costs about 1,2 million, or something like that, but then you get a car that you can drive with dignity for the rest of your life.

In the middle of the square stands "Lillegul" from the Burning films. The owner, Richard Andersen, is also there and I believe he is signing posters. The queue of hopeful adults and children is getting long. I look at the cars. I am fascinated by the Mk6, the latest model. The yellow one, which is the same one that was unsold last year - is still for sale. It appears as a new edition of "Lillegul". I also stop at a blue metallic convertible. I hear several people commenting on the great color. I find, as usual, several Mk1s that are built from brand new parts. Engine compartment that looks brand new. Seats and fittings - all new. This is possible, because all these parts can be bought new. Mk1 owners have a nice hobby.

In an age where all cars look exactly the same, it can be difficult to create brand affiliation. It becomes like gasoline. We choose the cheapest or nearest gas station, and hitch a ride in whichever logo is on the pumps. When the Ford dealer, Røhne and Selmer Billingstad, arrange Mustang meets, they advertise that it is de who is behind the Mustang. An attempt to avoid the Ford brand disappearing in the crowd...

Mustang is not just any car brand.

This is almost Ford Mustang. The brand is indeed called Zimmer and falls into the category of replica construction, - and like many similar replicas, the engine is a 5 liter Ford - exactly the same as the one we find in contemporary Mustangs. - And if the registration plate is correct, the vehicle was first registered in the summer of 1988.
